Cannes competition gets a shot of adrenaline from THE BLACK BALL, a sweeping, exciting gay triptych from Los Javis. Love! War! Cameos from Penelope Cruz and Glenn Close! This is a surefire, across-the-board Oscar contender so I’d expect a major pickup soon.
THE VIRGIN SUICIDES premiered 27 years ago at Cannes.
As Sofia Coppola’s feature directorial debut, it struggled to secure financing because studios reportedly had no idea how to market it. It became one of the defining indie films of its generation.
#AdamDriver says he has “a whole system” in place to sneak out of his own movies premiering at #Cannes:
“I can’t stand to watch myself. I have a whole system where I wait until everything is starting and I go through these mazes into a room that overlooks all these boats. And then I sneak back in and try not to be noisy so I can be there as the lights come up.”

David Cronenberg's "Crash" (1996) won the "Special Jury Prize" award at the Cannes Film Festival. It was said that some people in the jury didn't support such recognition. Francis Ford Coppola, the Jury president that year, described the film as "original, daring and audacious".
According to David Cronenberg, it was Francis Ford Coppola who was totally against the movie. Cronenberg believed that the award was the attempt of the other Jury members to get around the negativity of Coppola, since they had the power to present such award without the president's approval.
Coppola did not hand over the award to Cronenberg. He made other Jury members to do it. Cronenberg didn't like it and felt it wasn't gracious.
Whenever Cronenberg met Coppola after the festival, Coppola would always say, “Remember, we gave you this award.” Cronenberg swore to himself that the next time Coppola said that, he would remind Coppola that he was not amongst those who wanted to give the award.

Adam Driver responds in #Cannes to Lena Dunham's memoir, which alleges he was "verbally aggressive" and "hurled a chair at the wall next" to her on the "Girls" set.
“I have no comment on any of that. I’m saving it all for my book.”

Loved James Gray's bruising 1980s crime drama PAPER TIGER. Dark, disturbing and utterly riveting, with knockout performances from Adam Driver, Miles Teller and a never better Scarlett Johansson, who's just shattering. My @THR review from #Cannes2026
