After the @bihusinfo investigation into the current Minister of Veterans Affairs, I decided to put my thoughts on the Ministry here.

I don’t really see the point of having a separate Ministry of Veterans Affairs. I’ll try to briefly explain why.

It all comes down to resources.

As long as the war continues, most of the money will go to the Ministry of Defence. And that makes sense, because the priority right now is the army and the war. In this system, the Ministry of Veterans Affairs will always be on the sidelines, with a limited budget and limited capacity.

I don’t think things will get easier after the war. Probably the opposite. Money will be needed everywhere - defence, reconstruction, the economy, social programs. And the Ministry of Veterans Affairs will once again be saying that there are no resources. A rhetorical question - then why take these positions in the first place?

For me, the logical solution is a veterans department within the Ministry of Defence.

Veterans are people who already have experience defending the country. They are reservists, reserve officers, instructors and specialists with real combat experience. They already know how the military works, what responsibility means and what decisions in wartime can cost.

I don’t see the point of separating veterans from the Ministry of Defence and building a separate bureaucratic machine around them.

The Ministry of Defence should have a direct interest in working with veterans after their service. Treatment, rehabilitation, employment, support, adaptation to civilian life. This is what the system should be built around. The state has a clear interest, veterans have clear guarantees, and there are clear rules.

Talk about respect, gratitude and moral duty is, of course, fine in an ideal world. But if there are no resources and no real interest from the state behind those words, this system won’t get very far.

And even if tomorrow they put a competent veteran in charge of the Ministry, without real authority and resources, he won’t be able to do much. Just another chair and another position for “their own people.”

In our latest East/West Column article @DevinSanLuis talks about his time working with the 15th National Guard Brigade "Kara-Dah" as they fight to hold the Dobropillia axis of the frontline.

"We arrived just after an aerial bomb had been dropped on an apartment block, dust filling the air, fire still raging at the heart of the impact site. The entire middle part of the building collapsed in on itself; this area is the worst of all the destruction in Bilozers’ke[...] It’s not a good idea to ever be in one large group, as that makes you quite an enticing target for FPVs and pilots seeking to up their kill count. Sure enough, moments after converging as a group, we take turns running through the section of open field that separates us from the cover we will use to head toward our next position as the familiar buzz of FPV rotors hums to life."

На Теремки пригнали щонайменше три автобуси з поліціянтами.

Близько 50 правоохоронців захищають спецтехніку, а муніципальна охорона силоміць відтягує протестувальників з території.

Також на ділянку прийшли і ті, хто підтримує вирубку дерев – між ними та протестувальниками виникають суперечки.
