I have no allegiance to a genre. Genre is a ultimately a marketing tool. It’s capitalism dressed up as art and capitalism prioritizes money over humanity. Art, however, is innately and singularly human and I will always care about human stories before any genre, on and off stage.
The Americana industry benefits from being perceived as a safe space while continually failing to truly support the experiences of anyone but cis white men. On and off stage. At least mainstream genres aren’t hiding their values under false narratives of inclusion.
