2024 TO REMEMBER 🙏🏼🥹
2024 has been truly eventful — the full ecosystem of Tech, Media and Telco (TMT) coming together for me in quite unexpected ways, deepening and broadening my roles as journalist and corporate citizen. I am immensely grateful for the international recognitions that have come along while straddling both worlds for nearly four and a half years — from Asian TV Awards’ 2023 Best Talk Show Host to Stevie® Gold Award for Technology Excellence 2024 Executive of the Year — Communications Technology.
And most recently, as the Asian Academy Creative Awards’ 2024 National Winner (Philippines) for Best Factual Presenter.
For 2025, the clarion call comes from Media. With five seasons in — and multiple international awards to boot — Thought Leaders with Cathy Yang turns out to be just the start.
Thank you to all my Kapatid at @PLDT Group — I am incredibly privileged to have worked with you all. And to all my Kapatid in Cignal One News, I look forward to the new year creating more content and conversations for our fellow Pinoys — on air, on ground, and online. ❤️
See you all soon! 🤩

The softer-than-expected July inflation print has given the BSP more room to stay on its expected policy path, according to University of Asia and the Pacific economist Marco Antonio Agonia.
He said he had previously seen a greater chance of an emergency, off-cycle rate hike, but now expects the central bank to proceed with 25-basis-point increases in August and the following meeting instead. Agonia said inflation risks remain, with core inflation still above target and potential pressure from wage hikes and El Niño later this year. | via Money Talks

University of Asia and the Pacific economist Marco Antonio Agonia said July’s 6.2% inflation reading came in well below his 6.9% forecast, making it “a good thing to be wrong.”
He attributed the softer print to milder-than-expected increases in transport and food prices and the delayed impact of the NCR wage hike.
Still, Agonia said the easing in headline inflation was only “a bit of reprieve,” with core inflation remaining above the BSP’s comfort range. | via Money Talks

University of Asia and the Pacific economist Marco Antonio Agonia said slower inflation does not mean prices are falling, but that they are rising at a slower pace.
Speaking on One News' Money Talks, Agonia said households will continue to feel higher prices, adding that even Gen Z consumers may notice activities such as pickleball and bouldering becoming more expensive, though not as quickly as in previous months.

Marco Antonio Agonia, an economist at the University of Asia and the Pacific, said the peso may weaken to around ₱61 to ₱62 against the U.S. dollar by the end of the year, assuming inflation remains within the 6% to 7% range without major surprises.
Speaking on One News' Money Talks, Agonia said the peso's outlook will also depend on developments in U.S. Federal Reserve policy, which could drive further market volatility.

JULY INFLATION BRINGS RELIEF
University of Asia and the Pacific economist Marco Antonio Agonia said the lower-than-expected 6.2% inflation rate is a welcome development that eases pressure on the economy.

The Philippines' inflation rate eased to 6.2% in July from 6.4% in June, the Philippine Statistics Authority reported on Wednesday.
The PSA said the slower inflation rate was mainly driven by a slower annual increase in transport costs.

The reported ₱3.5 billion rescue package for ABS-CBN Corp. is “underwhelming,” Trading Edge chief investment strategist Ron Acoba tells One News’ “Money Talks,” because it will not be enough to cover the media network’s ₱22 billion short-term debt.
“For me, it is actually just a bridge that would allow the company to extend its operational runway,” Acoba says.
ABS-CBN Corp. denied on Monday that San Miguel Corp. chairman Ramon Ang and MediaQuest chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan are pursuing a takeover of the embattled media network.
The takeover rumors have fueled a surge in ABS-CBN Corp.’s shares, up nearly 3 percent for the past five trading sessions. | via Money Talks

The Marcos administration is “firm” that the Philippines does not buy products made with forced labor, as the United States charges a 12.5-percent tariff on Philippine goods.
Trade Secretary Cristina Roque tells One News’ “Money Talks” that three agencies have signed a joint administrative order—Trade and Industry, Labor and Employment, and Finance—declaring that the Philippines doesn’t engage in forced labor. It’s the reason why the U.S. slapped new tariffs on the Philippines and 59 more countries in July.
Manila is “still in constant negotiations” with Washington, according to Roque.
The Trade secretary emphasizes, though, that the government is pursuing free trade agreements with other countries to ensure the Philippines can penetrate the global market.
Roque highlighted that under the Marcos administration, 23 free trade agreements have been sealed, with the one with Chile being the most recent. | via Money Talks

Asked what the Philippines will gain from the agreement, Roque said it will provide jobs to farmers. Products that the government will push include coconut, pineapple, banana, ube and calamansi—the last two seen as “rising stars” in the global market. | via Money Talks
