"My main hope is that people turn out to vote, and they find that the barriers to voting aren't as onerous, and that they feel empowered to come out and vote in November," Kinnard added.

Political Science Ph.D. Candidate Benjamin Kinnard (27G) just voted, noting the importance of younger voters learning about local politics: "Knowing what happens at the DeKalb County Commission, or what happens at the city of Decatur, has a huge impact on our livelihoods."

"The ability to live out the dream that they fought for is very important to me," Williams said. "That is why I came out to vote."

Kyle Williams, special advisor to the senior VP and dean of campus life, just voted in Georgia for the first time, saying he thinks about his ancestors who fought for the right to vote, especially John Lewis. Both Williams and Lewis were members of Phi Beta Sigma, a Divine 9 frat

The second voter of the day just arrived at the polls. When asked if she was here to vote, she replied "you better believe it."

Polls are officially open. Associate Director of Community Programs at Emory's Office of Government and Community Affairs Kendra Price, who is also the first voter of the day, said there are 16 voting machines, so they're expecting a high turnout.
