EAC Ministers responsible for Agriculture and Food Security have adopted key policy, investment and regulatory measures aimed at strengthening food security, accelerating agricultural transformation, and promoting sustainable agri-food systems across the region.

Key outcomes of the 19th Session of the Sectoral Council on Agriculture and Food Security (#SCAFS), held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, included:

🔹Adoption of the EAC Regional Agri-Food Systems Investment Plan (RASIP) 2026–2035
🔹Approval of measures to strengthen implementation of the EAC Rice Development Strategy
🔹Endorsement of the Youth in Agri-Food Systems in East Africa (YASE) Platform
🔹Adoption of the EAC Strategy for the Management of Highly Hazardous Pesticides (2026–2036)
🔹Adoption of the Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) Control Strategic Framework for Eastern Africa (2026–2035)
🔹Approval of regional guidelines to strengthen animal health and facilitate regional livestock trade

The Sixth Extraordinary Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol is being held today in Bangkok, Thailand, alongside the 48th Open-ended Working Group (OEWG) Meeting of the Montreal Protocol on substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. A key agenda item of the meeting is the election of members to the Implementation Committee for the 2026–2027 term.

Kenya, represented by Ms. Linda Kosgei, Director of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) at the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, has served on the Implementation Committee during the 2024–2025 term as Vice President and Rapporteur for the Africa Group.

At today's meeting, Ms. Kosgei was elected President of the Implementation Committee for the next two years, a significant recognition of Kenya's continued leadership and commitment to advancing global environmental governance and multilateral cooperation.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Ms. Kosgei on this well-deserved achievement. Her election underscores the confidence placed in Kenya's leadership within the Montreal Protocol framework and reaffirms the country's influential role in shaping international environmental policy. We wish her every success as she leads the Implementation Committee in advancing the effective implementation of the Montreal Protocol over the coming two years.

Kenya Bureau of Standards, in partnership with the Centre for Environment Justice and Development (CEJAD), successfully convened a National Stakeholder Workshop to disseminate findings from the National Industrial Validation Assessment on Chemicals of Concern in Priority Plastic Products. The forum brought together regulators, industry players, academia, testing laboratories and development partners to discuss key findings and build consensus on the development of Kenya Standards aimed at enhancing consumer protection, environmental sustainability and the safe management of chemicals in plastics. ^FMA

Congratulations to Dr. Allan Azegele on his re-election as Chair of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) at the ongoing 49th Session of the Commission (CAC49) in Geneva, Switzerland. This distinguished achievement reflects the immense confidence and trust placed in Dr. Azegele by the international Codex community and stands as a testament to his exemplary leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to advancing global food safety and fair trade practices. The KEBS team was led by Managing Director Esther Ngari EBS. As Kenya continues to play a leading role in shaping international food standards, Dr. Azegele's re-election further strengthens the country's position on the global standards landscape and underscores its commitment to protecting consumer health and facilitating safe trade worldwide.
On the sidelines of CAC49, the Managing Director of KEBS paid a courtesy call on H.E. Dr. Fancy Chepkemoi Too, Kenya's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, reaffirming Kenya's commitment to international collaboration in standards development, food safety, and quality infrastructure.
We celebrate this remarkable milestone and wish Dr. Azegele every success as he continues to lead the Commission in driving consensus, innovation, and excellence in the development of international food standards for the benefit of consumers and businesses across the world.
