Watching the SF production ecosystem dissipate after The Armory closed was so sad. Just a slow, painful death. Crazy to watch it happen to the mainstream side of things. It took a few extra years, but not many.
I wanna post something even though I think nothing is gonna come of it and nothing is gonna change, nor do I have any idea what to do, so this is for no other reason then for posterity:
The overall health of the mainstream porn industry is at an all time low. We are at red alert and I know a bunch of producers that have either been let go from the companies they shoot for or massively scaled back in their workload. Companies are shooting less and only shooting a select group of talent, and for the organized industry we have itβs not sustainable.
The thing is that it becomes a compounding problem. If thereβs no work for the producer/directors, theres locations not being booked, PAs and crew not being paid, talent not shooting so they have to leave the major studio hubs, then agents not able to pay their bills so no new talent coming in.
The same thing happened to the mainstream Hollywood film industry and itβs been well documented.
Like I said at the start; I donβt have any answers for what to do. I just want to publicly sound the alarm so maybe people smarter then me can think of something to do. Because the way things are going, itβs not looking good for 2027
Gov. Gavin Newsom signed California's AB 1705, a law that makes adult content sites collect a verified email and a sworn consent statement from every person who uploads content.
The statement must say, under penalty of perjury, that everyone shown was an adult when the content was made, agreed to be shown and agreed to the upload.
Sites must verify the email before an upload goes live and keep the records for at least seven years.
Both the site and the uploader can be sued. A person shown in the content can seek up to $75,000 per violation plus punitive damages and attorney fees. Public prosecutors can bring civil cases seeking $25,000 per violation.
Each day non-compliant content stays up counts as its own violation. The law goes beyond existing federal 2257 recordkeeping rules and takes effect January 1, 2027.
California sites will have to keep these records for seven years. Where do you think a creator should store records that long, and who should be allowed to see them?
