A lot of people say you can hire a PR agency too early. Annie Scranton of Pace PR disagrees, but there are three things you need to be able to answer first.

Do you have a genuinely unique idea? PR works when there's a real story to tell. If the idea isn't distinct, the coverage won't be either.

Do you have a business model and real clients? A concept isn't enough. You need proof of concept — or at minimum, confidence that it's coming. PR can start before everything is locked in, but not before you know it's real.

Do you know what you actually want from the engagement? Awareness, credibility, investor attention, inbound leads — these require different strategies. If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.

Get clear on those three things. The agency conversation gets a lot more productive from there.
