Los Angeles, you never disappoint! ❤️
Due to insane demand, I've added another LA State Historic Park date on June 20th. These will be my ONLY LA shows of the year
Presale is live now with code ILOVELA
Great article. Spot on, and honestly, it's another reminder that us artists who have been around for a while and who have a platform are best placed to nurture future talent with guidance and support as much as possible. Thank you for writing this.
just woke up from a week long coma! opening for @chrislake tonight in san francisco. i wonder whether there are any useful tips on twitter dot com about opener etiquette, about to have a look. sure i will find people being normal about it 🙏🏾
I think there's more nuance to this conversation that needs to be taken into account.
I just checked your music and it's v high energy stuff. I wouldn't imagine there's 2 many artists that could energetically nerf your night. It's not like that for all styles of music tho
Openers should present themselves the way they want & play what they want
Headliners should know what they’re booking & support the next generation’s.
Those headliners were once openers & they didn’t become headliners by nerfing their sets
but in an ideal world, yes, I'd prefer the energy of the music before me, to allow me to lift it higher if I'm headlining. That leads to the best nights in my experience.
For me personally, I accepted years ago that I can't expect acts to do that, so I always tell people to do their normal thing and I just adjust accordingly. I usually have a short pause in music before I start that helps reset the mood too.

Kenyans invented running™
There are many different ways this can be done. I have custom visuals and lighting, but it's all triggered live. I try give a bunch of the music I might play to my VJ and LD ahead of time so they can get to know it, but that's it. If they don't know it, they just riff stuff.
the technology is called timecoding. you hit play on a song on the CDJ, the software recognises it + triggers the corresponding visual. this obviously takes a lot of programming in advance but pre-recording has nothing to do with it. let's stick to talking to things we know about
I do normally tell them what track I'm starting with though. But that often changes. Sometimes minutes before I go on (this happened just a few weeks ago in Nashville actually).
Anyway. Just saying it doesn't even have to be timecoded anymore to look good.
I love it this way. I get to stick to DJing based on my vibe and how I read the crowd. I don't get bogged down in needing to play my show a certain way and it keeps it interesting for my crew too.
@TheDFreshmaker@trinodj You're misunderstanding the DM. I'd already been asked by them via management and I reached out to Travis. Read the messages again.
Also, 'the bag' is another assumption. $ was never a part of the equation and not my driving force. I do loads of remixes for nothing.
