The water should be cold.

It isn't.

He noticed it three steps in...
that wrong kind of warmth,
the kind that doesn't belong to the ocean.
The kind that belongs to something older.

Ancient towers rise from the black below,
swallowed whole by a sea that forgot
what it was supposed to keep.

Ash falls above the surface.
Down here, it drifts.
Slow.
Like snow that never learned to land.

He moves through the ruins
the way you move through a dream...
certain the walls remember you,
uncertain why.

And then he sees it.

A doorway.
Carved in stone so old
it predates the word for fire.

And through it... light.

Not sunlight.
Not moonlight.

The other kind.

He doesn't go through.
Not yet.

But the water around his feet
has started to steam.

And Ashkyn still hasn't noticed.

The world holds its breath.
The ruins remember a name.
He just doesn't know it's his.

The heat rises first.
Not from the sun… but from below.

A shimmer in the air.
A tremor in the stone.
And then... he runs.

Not away.
Not toward.
But between the things the world pretends not to see.

Every summer, when the temperature climbs past reason,
the ancient fire stirs… remembering old grudges, old names, old promises.
And he returns to the edge of the burning path,
feet pounding against a world that feels ready to crack open.

The air ripples behind him.
Something massive wakes in the glow.
Something that should have stayed asleep.

But he doesn’t look back.
He can’t.
Because the moment he does, the fire remembers him fully.

And this summer?
The heat is different.
Hungrier.
Closer.

The chase isn’t about survival anymore.
It’s about keeping the world from learning what he’s running from.
