Vitamin A has an important history in the skincare industry. It has come a long way from its origins in Philadelphia to the many forms that are used today.

Retinol, however, is relatively unstable and can be irritating if used in high concentrations. To combat these issues, ester forms of retinol were introduced, such as retinol acetate, retinol palmitate, and retinol propionate.

Today, there are even newer forms of Vitamin A that are not widely used in the industry yet, but are on the cutting edge of technology. Understanding the history and science behind Vitamin A is crucial in formulating skincare products that are effective and safe for consumers.

The use of Vitamin A in skincare started with retinoic acid, a prescription-strength form of Vitamin A. Later, cosmetic forms of Vitamin A, like retinol, were introduced. Retinol is recognized as the natural form of Vitamin A and is also the alcohol form.
