Small businesses help neighborhoods Rise Higher!
Mayor Sheffield joined the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation and community partners to celebrate the opening of Samaritan Cafe in Wildemere Park, made possible through a $55,000 Motor City Match grant.
By transforming a long vacant property into a family owned restaurant, this investment is creating jobs, supporting local entrepreneurs, and bringing new life to the neighborhood.
Through programs like Motor City Match, Detroit continues to invest in the businesses and people helping our neighborhoods grow, thrive, and Rise Higher.
A major Japanese auto supplier — Nagase America Mobility Solutions — is the latest to relocate to the Motor City 🚘.
“The fact that a company with the history of Nagase chose Detroit says a lot about what our city has to offer, and where it is headed,” said Mayor Sheffield.
“Nagase has spent nearly two centuries perfecting the art of building things that last, and now bring their tradition of innovation and excellence to our city.”

Mayor Mary Sheffield shares an update on the City of Detroit's response to this weekend's storms:
“City crews have been working throughout the weekend to respond to storm damage, clear downed trees, address traffic signal issues, and support residents impacted by power outages.
If you have a downed tree blocking a street, please report it through the Improve Detroit app so crews can respond as quickly as possible.
If you encounter a downed power line, stay away and call 911 immediately.
Thank you to our first responders, City employees, and utility partners for their continued work, and to our residents for their patience as recovery efforts continue across Detroit."
Opportunity starts with investment.
Through a partnership between Mayor Sheffield, Tom Gores, the Detroit Pistons, and community partners, District 7 is getting its first indoor community center, a transformational investment that will serve thousands of Detroiters for generations to come.
More than a recreation center, this space will provide recreation, educational programming, mentorship, workforce development, financial literacy, and a welcoming place where young people can discover their potential, families can connect, seniors can gather, and neighbors can build community.
This is what it means to invest in people. Together, we’re creating opportunities that strengthen neighborhoods, expand access, and help every Detroiter Rise Higher.
“I moved, and I’m here to stay.” ❤️
When Toni Walters moved to Detroit just before the pandemic, she found more than a new address. She found welcoming neighbors, vibrant entertainment, local restaurants, and a community that gave her peace of mind and made her feel at home.
Stories like Toni’s reflect Mayor Sheffield’s vision to make Detroit the city where people choose to stay, move, and return by investing in neighborhoods, expanding opportunity, and creating communities where residents can thrive.

Today, Mayor Sheffield signed an Executive Order strengthening how the City of Detroit responds when temperatures become dangerous. Every City department now has a clear role in protecting residents and our workforce, from expanding access to cooling centers and protecting outdoor employees to pausing water shutoffs during extreme heat and coordinating support for seniors and residents experiencing homelessness.
As the heat continues, please do your part:
-Stay hydrated.
-Limit time outdoors during the hottest part of the day.
-Check on older adults, neighbors, and anyone who may need extra support.
Visit https://t.co/z4ImTJAI74 for cooling center locations and additional heat safety resources.
As temperatures continue to climb, City of Detroit Emergency Preparedness Director Dr. Kelvin Freeman is sharing simple ways to stay safe during this week’s extreme heat.
Stay hydrated, limit time outdoors, and check on your neighbors, especially seniors and those without air conditioning.
Need to cool off? Detroit recreation centers and public libraries are open during normal business hours.
