Save the Date: Annual Honor and Remembrance Ceremony

September 11, 2026, marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The Newport News Police Department, Newport News Fire Department and Newport News Sheriff’s Office will host the Annual Honor and Remembrance Ceremony to commemorate this solemn anniversary and honor the lives lost, the heroes who responded, and the sacrifices made that day and in the years that followed.

The city’s 9-1-1 operations will be unaffected by this maintenance. Citizens may still dial or text 911 during this time.

Newport News Human Services' Denbigh Satellite Office (368 Deshazor Drive) will permanently close on August 31, 2026.

Here’s what you need to know:
✔️ Services remain available at our main location, 6060 Jefferson Avenue.
✔️ You do not need a new caseworker.
✔️ You can still apply for benefits online through CommonHelp.

The Newport News City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, August 11, will be held at an alternate location.

The meeting will take place at the Freeman Center – Gaines Theater on the campus of Christopher Newport University, located at 1 University Place, Newport News, VA 23606. The Work Session will begin at 5:00 p.m., followed by the City Council meeting at 7:00 p.m.

Road Closure Alert: Industrial Park Road 🚧

Industrial Park Road will be closed beginning Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 6 a.m. and is expected to reopen Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 6 a.m. while CSX Transportation completes emergency repairs to the railroad crossing.

The closure will be a full road closure, and no vehicles will be able to cross the railroad tracks during this time.

Please follow posted detour signs, allow extra travel time, and avoid the area if possible. The work schedule may change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Any updates will be shared as they become available.
