Heading outdoors this weekend? Please remember to stay safe around cold water.
Before you head out:

- Wear a life jacket if jumping into cold water, even if you are a strong swimmer
- Keep pets safe too. Consider a pet life jacket, especially in cold water
Need a life jacket? Loaner vests are available from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue at all fire stations.

❗️Wildlife Safety Reminder ❗️
Please slow down and watch for wildlife. 🚗🐻
We have seen a significant amount of wildlife being hit and killed this season.
Bears and wildlife are moving through town, crossing busy streets, walking near shopping centers, and visiting neighborhoods during the day and night.
Young bears are especially vulnerable. Cubs are still learning their surroundings and often move more slowly than adult bears. Yearlings, now independent for the first time, are also adapting to life on their own. They do not understand the dangers of traffic, and they may cross roads unexpectedly or take longer to get across the road.
That is why it is so important for drivers to stay alert, reduce speed, be aware of your surroundings, and watch carefully for wildlife.
A little extra patience behind the wheel can help keep our wildlife safe. ❤️

Did you know May is Be Bear Aware Month?
We are seeing a significant increase in bear activity as new cubs emerge and yearlings begin venturing out on their own for the first time. Bears and other wildlife are not only found in meadows or deep in the forest. They are also moving through town, crossing busy streets, walking near shopping centers, and visiting neighborhoods regularly.

Heading outdoors this weekend?🌞 Stay Safe Around Cold Water!
Even with warm weather in the forecast, our rivers and lakes are still cold. Lake Tahoe’s average water temperature in May ranges from just 50 to 55 degrees. 🥶
Did you know?
Cold water shock can happen in water below 60°F. It affects your breathing, coordination, and muscle control, making it harder to swim and increasing the risk of drowning. Cold water is not a joke. It’s a serious danger that is often underestimated.
Safety tips for water activities:
⏺️ If you're paddleboarding, kayaking, or boating 🚤, wear a life jacket. It can save your life if you fall or get injured.
⏺️ Jumping off a boat into cold water? Wear a life jacket, even if you're a strong swimmer.
⏺️ Don’t forget your furry friends 🐶. They can get cold too, and not all dogs are natural swimmers. Consider a pet life jacket for their safety.
Don't have a life jacket? Loaner vests are available from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue at all fire stations.

As we quickly approach Spring, remember that bears will be emerging from their dens. This includes mother bears and their new cubs. Please remember to secure trash to help keep them out of residential and commercial areas.
Also, take it slow while driving and be aware of your surroundings since cubs may be slowly making their way across roads after a mother bear crosses.

❄️ Snow Removal Reminders
Do’s and Don’ts
✅ DO
🚜 Do give snowplow operators the right of way. Crews work long hours to keep roads safe, and giving them space helps snow removal operations run smoothly.
🔔Do stay informed about snow operations and parking restrictions. Check City updates for the latest information.
🚜Do expect delays with snow removal operations with excessive amounts of snow in a short period during a storm. With the heavy snow, plows are traveling at 4 to 5mph, instead of their usual speed of 8mph.
🧯Do clear snow from around fire hydrants. This helps first responders during emergencies.
❄️Do expect snow removal operations once more than three inches of snow has accumulated.
❌ DON’T
🚗Don’t park your vehicle in the street during snowplow operations. This can delay plowing operations plus your vehicle may be towed and subject to citation.
🚫Don’t place 📬mailboxes, 🗑️trash containers, vehicles, or obstacles in the right-of-way. This helps prevent damage and keeps operations moving efficiently.
🚜 Don’t follow snowplows too closely. Plows may stop or change direction unexpectedly, and allowing space helps prevent delays and keeps everyone safe.

Important storm warning from our NWS Reno partners:
Avalanche Warning in the backcountry for HIGH avalanche danger.
Travel in avalanche terrain not recommended. Heavy snow & gusty winds today, weak snowpack layers.
Natural avalanches likely, and human-triggered avalanches large enough to bury or injure people very likely.

As forecasted by @NWSSacramento, a late-winter storm arrived last night, bringing steady rain to the Valley and snow in the Sierra. Chain controls are in effect on both Highway 50 and Interstate 80. Traffic is currently being held in both directions on 80 due to spinouts.
Winter Storm Warning goes into effect stating tonight. Traveling is discouraged, but if you will be on the roads be prepared and expect delays or possible road closures.
A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the foothills and mountains from Sunday evening through Wednesday evening. Expect major travel impacts from heavy snow, and mountain travel is highly discouraged during this time! #CAw
