Did you know Oklahoma is home to some of the most influential transportation innovations in American history? 🚗💨
Here are a few fun facts:
🛣️ Route 66 Pioneer: A Tulsa businessman helped create the national 1926 highway numbering system and picked "66" for the famous highway, earning him the title "Father of Route 66."
⚠️ The First Yield Sign: In 1950, Tulsa police officer Clinton Riggs designed the very first "Yield" sign to improve intersection safety.
🅿️ Parking Meter Innovation: In 1935, the world's first mechanical parking meter was installed in downtown Oklahoma City to manage curb space!
By the numbers in Oklahoma:
📊 46 billion vehicle-miles traveled annually
📊 115,560 miles of roads
📊 3,707,717 vehicle registrations
📊 2,564,949 licensed drivers

Who said safety couldn't be fun? Last week, City employees showed off their safety and heavy equipment skills through some friendly competition.
At this year's City of Tulsa Safety Rodeo, employees were challenged to put their skills to the test through a variety of games, including the Track Hoe Softball Shuffle, UTV Obstacle Course, Track Loader Basketball Course, Vactor Bowling, and more.
While the games brought some fun competition, they also showcased the skill and precision that our employees use everyday.
The City of Tulsa and its employees are dedicated to working at the highest level of safety standards, and we are proud of our employees who make safety a first priority in everything they do!
As part of drilling being done to collect soil samples, contractors have narrowed the northbound lanes along South Yale Avenue, between East 71st and East 81st Streets.
This drilling is part of a future rehabilitation project on the retaining walls along South Yale. Over time, small amounts of movement have created gaps between the sidewalk and curb in some areas. The rehabilitation project will help stabilize the retaining walls and prevent further movement, reducing the need for ongoing repairs.
Lanes will remain narrowed until Friday, Oct. 9. During the drilling, drivers are encouraged to follow posted signage, use caution in the area, and allow extra travel time.
The Tulsa area's new transportation plan is ready for review, and your feedback is greatly needed.
Over the better part of this year, the Indian Nations Council of Governments (INCOG) has analyzed how people and goods move across our region to find ways to improve safety, travel reliability, and transit choices.
They have identified 25 key congestion corridors and built a toolbox of strategies to help our region meet its future needs.
Now, they need to know: Did they get it right?
You have until Oct. 14 to review the draft Congestion Management Process Plan (CMPP) and share your thoughts.
You can read the plan and submit your feedback at:

With rain chances in the forecast this week, now is a good time to make sure your vehicle is ready for wet roads.
Take a few minutes to check your windshield wipers, tire tread and tire pressure, headlights, and brake lights. These simple checks can help improve visibility and traction when conditions are rainy.
And when you’re on the road, slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, and never drive through standing water. A little preparation can go a long way toward keeping everyone safe.

We’re happy to see the much-needed rain, but it’s a good time to remember to slow down and drive safely.
When roads are wet, leave plenty of space between you and other vehicles and use extra caution. If you come across standing water on the roadway, please don’t drive through it. During heavy downpours, water can collect quickly in some areas, but our stormwater system is designed to move it off the streets as efficiently as possible.
A little patience can help keep everyone safe. And remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
[8:21A - 9/10/26] A band of showers and scattered storms continues across NE #OKwx this morning. Storm activity will be moving into the Tulsa metro area within the hour. Gusty winds to 40 mph and heavy downpours. Expect this activity to shift slowly south and east with time.
