"Although I stayed in Kyiv for only a week, I could feel how quickly the desensitisation sets in. During your first air alert, you dutifully follow the instructions and head for the nearest shelter. After a few, you start ignoring the yellow warnings"--@mboudry for @Quillette https://t.co/dMkshri0VB
Do you mean misinformation about Scott in particular, or the rationalist/AI Safety community?
Because it's one thing to argue that position X is wrong, quite another to describe position X as "being knifed."
(If Pinker had spread some defamatory material about Scott, I would understand the response, but I do not think he has done that.)
If a movement is so intolerant of critique that it experiences criticism as the equivalent of being “knifed,” it will ossify into dogma very quickly, if it hasn’t already. I’m surprised that people who pride themselves on their rationalism can't see this https://t.co/6pHkCiIq5E
Sorry, but I stand by this. I am generally all in favor of truth-seeking, and I hope my life and previous output reflect that. But I also think that this is a two-way street, and when someone spreads misinformation about you, then you have to respond by saying, clearly, that you think their conduct is unacceptable. I realize there's a high bar for doing that, and I tried to give many, many examples in the article of what Steven did that I think passes that bar (and to err on the side of truth-seeking anyway by addressing all of his arguments). I just don't think it's stable to keep pretending that everything is fine after someone repeatedly knives you. My impression of your past work is that you're not shy about saying when you think someone has crossed a line, and I don't think I'm doing anything you wouldn't do here.
Hopefully if you read the article this will become clearer.
@allen_brutus@clairlemon I think you are insensitive to the many ways that Claire has viciously smeared Scott and his fellow travelers. Beyond the examples he provided.
I believe he has more than amply made his intended point in the letter itself.
@ciphergoth@NathanpmYoung As I said in my original tweet, Scott makes good & important points, (including about me) but anyone who doesn't already agree with him substantively is going to be put off by the aggression in the piece. Particularly given that Steve was so generous in his own essay.
Scott Alexander has replied to Steven Pinker. He makes some good point as you'd expect, especially on the capability of the models. I was less convinced when he tried to explain why LLMs would become power seeking.
He also calls me a 'culture warrior' & 'lowest quality voice' in the debate.

@zagrebbi@ciphergoth Yes I understand that is the argument, but I'm not the only one who has noticed that this ideology risks becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.

@zagrebbi@ciphergoth What I was trying to draw out through my questioning was the apparent contradiction of being focused on AI Safety while pushing forward the frontier at breakneck pace.
Highly recommend this article. Tldr modern AI looks nothing like the mental models of the doomers, but they’re ironically doing their best to summon their own nightmare.
Years after Canada's CanLit establishment branded Steven Galloway a rapist, defendants are settling and apologising as his defamation trial begins. @bradcran on the fallout.
