What does clean cooking have to do with gorilla conservation?
Collecting wood for fuel contributes to habitat degradation, impacting gorillas through food loss, stress, and increased risk of disease transmission.
Clean, modern stoves and fuels can provide the energy people need while improving air quality and reducing pressures on forests.

Introducing the Clean Cooking NDC Tracker 🌍
Over 2 billion people rely on open fires or polluting stoves to cook. Tackling this issue is a health, economic, and climate imperative. Countries' National Determined Contributions (NDCs) are one of the most powerful tools governments have to drive change.
So, where does clean cooking stand in those plans?
Our new NDC Tracker answers that question for 131 low- and middle-income countries:

We're thrilled to see the Women in Clean Cooking (WICC) mentorship program featured in a newly published academic book chapter!
The chapter explores how energy access and electrification affect women differently, highlighting WICC as a case study in gender-sensitive energy development.
CCA has been proud to co-organize the WICC mentorship program alongside GWNET and @SEforALLorg to support women leaders across the clean cooking sector.
Congratulations to the authors, the GWNET team, and every mentor and mentee who made this work possible 👏

Commending Her Excellency First Lady of Sierra Leone @Ladyfatimabio for the strong leadership role she continues to play nationally and regionally in advancing the clean cooking agenda across West Africa.
As Her Excellency noted at the launch of the @ecowas_cedeao LPG Initiative and the High-Level Policy Dialogue on Clean Cooking:
“Good intentions are not enough. That’s why, in partnership with the Clean Cooking Alliance, we established the Clean Cooking Delivery Unit. This is not just a unit; it is the engine of our national ambition. It coordinates across governments, drives accountability, and ensures delivery. Because clean cooking is not the responsibility of one ministry; it is the responsibility of a whole nation.”

Today, I am deeply honored to accept the role of Regional Clean Cooking Champion for West Africa. This responsibility is not merely a title—it is a call to action. A call to stand for the millions of women and children whose lives are endangered daily by the lack of access to clean cooking solutions.
This honour was bestowed on me this morning during the officially launching of the 2026 ECOWAS Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) Programme, alongside the High-Level Policy Dialogue on Clean Cooking, Gender Equality, and Child Protection, here in Sierra Leone. This important dialogue is a direct response to the growing crisis of limited access to clean cooking across our continent.
The numbers are staggering. Globally, more than 3.7 million people die each year due to exposure to smoke and toxic fumes—most of them women and children. This is not just a statistic; it is a humanitarian crisis that demands urgent and collective action.
In Sierra Leone, only 1.5% of the population has access to clean cooking. This means that over 98% of our people still rely on biomass, including firewood. For me, this is not just an environmental concern—it is a national emergency and a public health crisis. For millions of African women, this is not a choice; it is their daily reality.
I extend my deepest gratitude to my husband, His Excellency the President of Sierra Leone and Chairman of ECOWAS, for his unwavering leadership and support. I also thank the Clean Cooking Alliance, PIECREF, and the ECOWAS delegation for their commitment to this critical cause.
My sincere appreciation goes to Her Excellency Mrs. Racheal Ruto, First Lady of Kenya, and Madam Samira Bawumia, former Second Lady of Ghana and a champion for clean cooking, as well as to the Government of Sierra Leone for their leadership and dedication. Thank you all for honoring my invitation and standing with us at this official launch.
As Regional Clean Cooking Champion for West Africa, I call on all of us—governments, partners, and communities—to act with urgency and unity. Let us ensure that no woman loses her life simply because she lacks access to clean cooking. Let us seize this moment to transform how we cook in our homes and kitchens across Africa.
May God bless Sierra Leone.
May God bless Africa.
FMB.
Longtime Clean Cooking Champion H.E. @SBawumiaonX said it best: access to modern energy for cooking can be transformational.
That's why CCA continues to invest in the fundamentals of strong and sustainable clean cooking markets.

📢 CCA's 2025 Annual Report is out now.
Progress on clean cooking happens when governments act, markets function, and evidence drives decisions. In 2025, we saw all three, and continue to be motivated to turn ambition into implementation.

What does institutional clean cooking look like?
At Mama Ngina school in Kiambu County, Kenya, it looks like two 600-liter electric stoves, installed by Ecobora, with a @BurnMfg briquette stove in case of a power outage. With these changes, the school can feed its nearly 2,400 students and immediately move away from smoky and expensive firewood.
We’re grateful for the opportunity to co-host last week's session at the International Vienna Energy and Climate Forum on Scaling Gender-Just Access to Clean Cooking Solutions. A highlight was hearing from two former Women in Clean Cooking program mentees, who shared powerful reflections.
Planning to attend next week's #EuropeanClimateSummit in Barcelona hosted by @IETA? Don't miss an in-depth discussion on what it it take to build a successful market for the #PACM.
CCA's Steven Pluymaekers will share insights on the CLEAR Methodology for #cleancooking, alongside a range of experts from @TotalEnergies, Bridge Carbon, @southpoleglobal, and the PACM Supervisory Body. #ECS2026
Across Kenya, schools, hospitals, and prisons feed millions of people daily, cooking almost entirely with smoky wood fires and inefficient stoves.
The government's new sector pack illustrates why investing in institutional clean cooking is so compelling:
- Significant and predictable energy demand
- Proven appliances and fuels
- Flexible financing
- Political commitment
