“I want guys to run Track in the Spring. It’s hard to manufacture that level of competition. It’s You vs. the Clock. When you get out on the track and compete you’re going to get better.”
- Chip Kelly
"Culture is organic. It is not a sign up in your building. It's not a t-shirt you wear. It's not breaking the team down and saying 'Culture on 3'..."
If you want to know how Steve Sarkisian built the Texas football program, take 5 minutes to listen to this. Fantastic insight.
Five Keys to Success: Punt/Punt Return
When you or your opponent is punting, it can be a game-changing play. Regardless if you are on Punt or Punt Return, here are five keys to success that may be able to help you win this play....
#5 - Catch punts
The team that is more likely to catch the punt is usually the team that has an advantage. You can go for the block, but get someone to fair catch. Line up your returner based on scouting and encourage him to field any punt possible. The hidden yardage lost by people being scared to catch punts is crazy!
#4 - Be creative when necessary with your punter
If you have a great punter, don't overthink it...let him conventional punt. If you do not have one, start working with your QB or best athletes and find a way to scare the defense with a great athlete as a punter. With work you can teach most good athletes to rugby punt at least.
#3 - Know the personnel
Understand all you can about yours and their personnel.
- Who is the person on your team most likely to block the punt? (May not be who you think...);
- Who makes all the tackles on their punt team? (It's usually the same people over and over);
- Do they slip in their best players at certain times? (It usually means something if they do....)
#2 - Know the weird rules
Teach your team the weird rules...
- First Touching
- Free Kick
- Block beyond the line of scrimmage v. Block behind the line of scrimmage
#1 - Focus on winning net punt
Think of your punt and punt return team as one entity that needs to control the game. It doesn't matter how far the punt goes, it matters where they get the ball. Teach your team how to focus on net punt and every yard matters. Keep stats of your net punt against your opponent's and see who wins.
I Can't stand "S.O.F.T." Players!
S - satisfied with being average
O - only concerned about self
F - finds excuses easily
T - tough in speech, but not action
* This applies to coaches as well!
1. With the game on the line in OU-Texas: "You can't practice the intensity and the pressure—"
2. Brent Venables: "Yes, you can."
3. Don't mind Oklahoma.
Right now I am 7-0, but I was also once 0-7, 3-4, 4-3.

at Nebraska:
“ Well, it started in the weight room. Our culture here revolves around it. We take great pride in dominating our opponents physically, and for the most part, we just wear people down “
