NBA bigs do a great job loading to the ball using their full wingspan in transition defense.
Doesn’t seem prioritized at lower levels or players struggle to grasp the value for consistently shrinking the floor.
Big fan of this action. Have only seen it from Pacers so far in the #NBAPlayoffs.
Skip the step up ballscreen with a touch & go from big, plus weakside motion for tag manipulation. Sheesh!
Foul-baiting still seems to be a common topic of conversation.
But can we acknowledge the number of no calls on hug & holds when teams switch off the ball?
If anyone knows how to navigate AI better than I do, please enter the command:
Extract all drills from Xavier Newsletters from the Chris Mack era.
This was one of the best free resources for coaches during 2010s.
When recruiting, I always watch warmups to see who treats it a little different.
Won’t cross a kid off because of it, but definitely keep a mental note of who has an extra rep routine or is more engaged.
If you’re looking to break into coaching there is a GA spot available that I have ties to.

I’d be curious the private sector’s response or stance on taking former athletes during this era of NIL.
Everything being equal, if you were choosing to hire an Alex Karaban or someone who had transferred 3-4x, who would you choose?

The Gortat Screen has been activated during March Madness. Sharing a few different clips of tournament teams implementing this concept and where it's been most effective.
But, it's really just a moving screen, right?

Coaches: This is simply one of the best coaching ( and leadership) articles I have ever read from my friend @Coachneighbors, the newest assistant of the @DallasWings. I am going to read it three more times today. https://t.co/mguGJE9qIQ via @NYTimes
Mike Conley on what basketball intelligence is to him.
(Really good long quote, on being a point guard)
“It’s an understanding of the game that’s a little bit deeper than just playing really fast… it’s a understanding of feel, like Donte has made 2 in a row, let’s get him his third shot or Ant hasn’t had a shot in 5 possessions let’s get Ant a shot or how can I get him an easy bucket or decision making, you got a 3 on 1 fast break and you got one guy whose cold and you need him to get hot and you got another guy who has made a couple, you go hey let me try and get an easy one for the guy who hasnt made a shot… if you have a high IQ you can kind of see the play develop, you know what’s going to happen and you can start talking your way in and out of situations”
A quiet trend in college this season has been teams playing above the nail on offense.
This stresses the help, particularly teams who play packline. Hedging screens results in automatic Gator cues (pass at the POA and slip the screen) or long closeouts due to better passing angles.
Step up screens, stack out and pistol actions are starting to replace zoom and Spain as the dominant 3 man actions.
Arizona has distorted their spacing out of the Tommy Lloyd BS continuity, pushing the screens to the slot and playing a ton of delay/delay into DHO. This generates more space to shake or cut, countering teams beginning to help or peel off of the strong side corner, among other advantages.
This was my favorite action from them in last nights’ game. Almost an impossible action to send effective help against. 👇🏼

Love it! And then on the flip side you have someone like Brad Underwood who has completely transformed his style of play into an equally successful stretch.
Two different mindsets attacking what gives their team/program the best opportunity to be successful and committed to it.
"I haven't flinched. I'm playing the same exact style [...] and I'm doubling down on it. I'm not worried about trends." 🗣️

Ben McCollum shares what it feels like to be around first-place people and a first-place culture.
"I went to Northwest Missouri State, and my first practice with Steve Tapmeyer - best coach I've ever been around - I sat there and I'm like, 'This is what first place feels like. This is what a first-place culture feels like. This is what first-place people feel like.'"
That was the wake-up call. He realized what first-place people have:
"They've got an extreme work ethic. They've got an edge to 'em that other people don't - a competitive spirit."
Then he quoted John Thompson:
"You can tame a fool a lot quicker than you can resurrect a corpse...We want guys with a little edge to 'em."
You can coach skills, but you can't coach competitive spirit. You don't want to consistently coach their effort and attitude.
The last thing they look for: Energy givers.
"Over the years, we found that guys that are moody don't make it in our program."
"If you're moody, if you have low energy, if you suck the life out of the building - you don't make it."
Talent isn't enough. Your energy matters. Your attitude matters.
Successful people have a competitive edge, they bring energy, and they look to consistently get better.
They raise the standard through what they do.

Love the approach by Iowa caging 2 on the ball to finish the game. And Lee was still quick enough to get the edge.
High level hoops between those two teams & coaches!
