Remember when IBM DOS 5.0 was cutting edge? I do.
Documenting my physical collection to show where modern tech started.
To prepare for the future it helps to reflect on these artifacts from the past. Did you save any?

@thevoguewriters The best leaders don't just survive the heat; they thrive in it.
In HEAT 2, Michael Mann shows us true power isn't about being the loudest in the room. It's about two things:
• Managing fear as a tool, not a paralyzer
• Building trust through shared, high-stakes competence.
AI isn't discovering truth. It's imposing order.
In Ch 7 of Nexus, Harari warns we’re trading default privacy for the total AI annihilation of the concept. No brain chips needed—just smartphones.
The machines never sleep. But humans must.
Guard your agency.
🚫 DO NOT USE AI for protein folding for new drugs.
✅ Spend decades on trial-and-error lab work and delay life-saving treatments instead.

@ohmyhumanity Appreciate it!
I’m taking a little longer to get through it because there’s so much rich detail here — way more than what fits into my usual 280-character summaries.
Trust the algorithm?
In Ch 6, Harari notes AI isn’t becoming 'human' any more than planes became birds. We’ve traded human info chains for non-human 'members' tasked with truth and order. AI doesn't need a soul to hack us—just language.
Tech isn't destiny; we still have agency.

My favourite is Police Quest II:
'Draw Gun'
'You don't have it'
**remembers I left it in the gun locker at the jail and have to restart the game. Gets head blown off**

@PHESBlAN Dial-up's still out there — rural areas where broadband companies decided the ROI wasn't worth it. Are you parents just quirky, or are they geographically unlucky?
@insaneclownpusi Welcome to the club. Happens to the best of us. I think the slop getting *good* at looking legit is the interesting part, not the embarrassing part. Just don't give it your credit card.
@TheRamenDon I guess that's life in 2026. I had a similar experience on the bus with a noisy dumb dumb on their phone. In that scenario I was the normal gen x person sitting quietly like we were taught was socially acceptable 30 years ago.
@Soulb411 People really do treat AI like sports teams. 'My team is on a losing streak, I'm switching.'
Your point that we are in the early stages is on point. This has played out before:

@craigh64@davepl1968 Repetition and necessity. Made so many of these boot disks with hardly any reference material to help get them right. Had to be perfect or you couldn't play Doom on 4MB. ️
