It is with profound sadness that I join Barbados, the Caribbean and the cricketing world in mourning the passing of The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers, our Sir Garry.
From Bay Land to Kensington and onto the world stage, he carried Barbados and the West Indies with distinction. He made us all stand a little taller as Barbadians, and I will always be grateful for what he gave to our country and our people.
I extend my deepest condolences to his family and all who loved him.
Today has been declared a Day of National Mourning. Flags will be flown at half-mast, no official functions will take place, and details of the State Funeral will be announced.
Barbados stands. The West Indies stand. The world stands.
Well played, Sir Garry. Well played.
I'm soaking up the Greek sunshine this week... but DO NOT FEAR, I got ya!

In 2026, I cannot believe we are being asked to respond to the suggestion that the descendants of the enslaved should pay for the machinery that oppressed them.
The Caribbean does not owe Britain for slavery, for colonial extraction, or for laws that treated African people as chattel. We are not asking for charity. We are asking for justice, and history itself has already told the truth.
Those who wish to speak on this matter should first take the time to read enough history to understand it. The Caribbean will not be used as a prop for anyone’s politics. We know who we are, we know what was done, and we will continue to speak for repair with clarity and dignity.

African Corrupt Leaders and The Hands Behind Them
Over the past couple of weeks, 2 former high level government officials from Nigeria and Ghana living in the UK and US respectively, who are both subjects of high profile corruption probes in their home countries, received legal guarantees of state protection against extradition to face trial at home. Once again, we are confronted with an issue that many in the Global North love to pretend does not exist.
Africa's "fantastically corrupt" governments are always cited as the reason behind the continent's state of underdevelopment. What is deliberately omitted by the Western loudmouths who recycle this talking point and infinitum is the foundational role that their own governments play in the acquisition, transfer and warehousing of stolen African state resources, as well as the shielding and protection offered to corrupt African government officials by the same Western governments that have a lot to say about "fighting corruption in Africa."
@Big_Mck explores this topic for The Spearhead.
@ronkelawal We can’t comment! But Windrush Foundation and its lead, Arthur Torrington, would feel vindicated to hear you say that! They argued, and lobbied, for Windrush Square.
@ronkelawal We did a couple of radio episodes on this - talking to two sides about where to place it - Waterloo Station or Windrush Square in Brixton. The warning was loud and clear that people would soon forget it if it was installed in Waterloo.
And so everything is a commodity.
Every emotion and story can be shared for engagement because engagement is afterall the fuel that keeps the wheels of popularity turning.
