A new study maps #schizophrenia symptoms as a connected network — not isolated entities.
Key hubs: negative #symptoms, cognitive deficits & #depression.
Childhood #trauma and insight also shape the network.

This study gets at something fundamental: hallucinations may arise not from hearing voices, but from the brain failing to recognise its own.

[Chris Aiken, MD @chrisaikenmd]

Do people with schizophrenia mistake their inner voice for hallucinations?

Hard to say, but this EEG study raises it to a strong possibility:

The PEQ has been used for years without formal validation. This paper fixes that — and gives the field a shorter, validated tool for measuring both positive and negative persisting effects.

Methodological housekeeping that actually matters.

New paper – Validating and Creating a Short-Form of the Persisting Effects Questionnaire: A Measure of Positive and Negative Outcomes from Psychedelic Experiences

The Persisting Effects Questionnaire (PEQ) is a measure of self-reported positive and negative effects from psychedelic experiences. While commonly used, the PEQ has never been formally validated, and is time-intensive and complex for both participants and researchers.

Using a multi-study approach, CPCR researchers created and validated the Persisting Effects Questionnaire – Short Form (PEQ-SF), a scale that is more easily understood and reduces burden for study teams and participants.

Now, your turn:What's the smartest scientific paper title you've ever come across? And do you think quoting song lyrics in academic papers is fine — or should science keep it strictly serious?

This deserves attention. Day-level, country-level data on child suicide is exactly the kind of evidence that policy and prevention need.

🔖Self-stigma varies by diagnosis and illness stage — higher early in bipolar disorder, increasing over time in schizophrenia, even with rehabilitation.

A groundbreaking study shows schizophrenia is linked to epigenetic alterations in a critical stress-regulating gene.

Researchers from the University of Sydney and the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry discovered that in individuals with schizophrenia, protective chemical tags—specifically DNA methylation—are stripped away from a gene known as FKBP5.

This gene normally acts as a biological brake to help neurons shut down stress hormones like cortisol. Without these chemical brakes, the FKBP5 gene is essentially left 'stuck on,' causing the brain's stress-control systems to remain in a permanent state of overload.

As these chemical tags are lost, the resulting hyper-heightened stress response is particularly concentrated in the frontal cortex, the area of the brain responsible for memory, decision-making, and emotional control. Scientists found that these changes become increasingly pronounced with age, meaning the stress response system switches on more easily and stays active longer as people grow older.

This cumulative exposure to unchecked stress over time can damage neural pathways, dramatically increasing vulnerability to severe psychiatric symptoms. By pinpointing this precise molecular switch, the research opens exciting new pathways for developing targeted therapies that could finally repair the brain's broken stress-control machinery.

The work was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
