The Invisible Grasp: What Schweizer Misses About Mexico

Peter Schweizer’s "The Invisible Coup" argues that hidden forces undermine American democracy. In its discussion of Mexico, the book uses the country mainly to illustrate its broader thesis, relying on oversimplification and selective evidence to make its point. This methodological flaw skews the portrayal of reality throughout the work.

The distortion starts with the book’s main claim: Mexico seeks a covert 'reconquista' to recover 19th-century territories. Rather than offering genuine policy analysis, Schweizer cobbles together out-of-context remarks from Mexican figures. Instead of keeping distinctions clear, he pairs former President Vicente Fox, a 21st-century conservative populist, with quotes from José Vasconcelos, an early-20th-century philosopher and former Secretary of Education, and then presents their words as fragments of a single plot. This is not scholarship; such polemics ignore Mexico's diverse political discourse and democracy.

This pattern of baseless assertions culminates in the book’s most reckless claim. It makes libelous suggestions linking President Claudia Sheinbaum to organized crime, presented without a shred of evidence. Such an allegation is not an analysis. It is a hollow device that insults the office and the Mexican electorate.

The book’s main conspiracy theory claims that Mexico’s consular network covertly tried to influence a U.S. election, an institutionally incoherent idea. For 200 years, our consular service has operated under the Vienna Convention and U.S. law, with a clear, public, and humanitarian mandate: we protect Mexican citizens, issue documents, and foster community ties. To propose a covert operation spanning 53 consulates is not only implausible but also an insult to the professional integrity of our diplomats.

The notion of "weaponized migration"—the claim that Mexico deliberately channels migrant flows for political gain—overlooks two facts: Mexican migration is declining, and our governments work together to manage migration issues. Mexico enforces its own laws and coordinates with U.S. agencies. Characterizing a complex humanitarian challenge as a weapon is not genuine analysis; it is propaganda that distracts from actual solutions.

Schweizer’s portrayal relies on the tired trope of a struggling Mexico and omits key facts that define the nation’s trajectory. Mexico is the United States’ largest trading partner and the world’s 12th-largest economy. The national poverty rate has fallen to just over 36%. Our security strategies now prioritize intelligence and target state corruption. These are signs of a developing nation, not a failing one.

Schweizer misreads the U.S.-Mexico relationship. It is not about vulnerability or subversion. It is a negotiated partnership. Agreements like USMCA reflect mutual interest. Mexico cooperates on security and trade in line with its interests and principles. The relationship is complex but among equals.

"The Invisible Coup" may grip readers, but it gives a skewed view of Mexico. Instead of recognizing economic strength or resilience, Schweizer chooses sensational fiction. Understanding Mexico—a vital U.S. partner—means facing its complexity. Falling for conspiracies fails readers.

As the Security Cabinet reported this morning, peace and security have been restored in the areas affected by yesterday’s operation in the state of Jalisco.

Our missions abroad have been informed, and we are in communication with the embassies in Mexico that have issued consular advisories for their nationals, to provide any information they may require.

In Mexico, the rule of law prevails to protect the security and wellbeing of everyone in the country.

The Secretariat of National Defense reported on the operation carried out this morning by the Mexican Army and the National Guard, which led to several roadblocks and other reactions.

The Mexican Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) reports that, following events recorded this morning in the vicinity of the Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and Tepic airports, some international airlines bound for Puerto Vallarta Airport diverted their flights based on their internal protocols. However:

The airports continue to operate normally.

Inter-institutional coordination and collaboration with various security agencies are in place to guarantee the safety of operations and all users.

Emergency Operations Centers (COE) at each airport are working according to their established protocols.
