Starting today, garden, SHOP, cafe, and first floor reopen with free drop-in activities and tours.
Due to the government shutdown, we are temporarily closed beginning on Sunday, Oct. 12. We will update our operating status as soon as the situation is resolved. We do not plan to update social media other than to inform you of changes to our operating status.
While the museum’s galleries are closed for installation, join free drop-in design activities in the Garden from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.

Smithsonian museums, research centers, and the National Zoo will use prior-year funds to remain open to the public during the federal government shutdown through Saturday, October 11, 2025. Updates will be posted as needed on the Smithsonian’s website.
Cooper Hewitt’s galleries remain temporarily closed for installation through November 20. Our garden, SHOP, and cafe are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.
