Shortly after his release, he was once again in trouble, this time for stealing a copper bar. This time the judge was not lenient, and he was sentence to 14 years transportation. He returned to Essex slightly earlier than his sentence allowed, to marry in 1848.

@packrat74 I always tell people to imagine their ancestors speaking in a broad local accent when working out search terms - my southgate easily becomes “suggate” when spoken in Suffolk.

@packrat74 The women interest me in particular - those who changed their name as adults.

@packrat74 There was quite a lot of surname changes to match a stepfather, and an awful lot of juniors and "the 2nd" adding a middle name to avoid that suffix. I am definitely getting Jesse's petition - he ended up incredibly wealthy so the change definitely did him some good!

@packrat74 There is also a woman whose husband disappeared during the war of 1812. She reverted to her maiden name, and then had a terrible time trying to claim his pension later on while explaining why she didn't have his name.

@packrat74 Gosh. That must have been tricky to unpick. There are a lot of adoptions in the later records.

@packrat74 The petitions from that period are still extant so I’m making a list of unusual people and will be heading to the archives in the autumn
