During World War II, the UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army) carried out the Volhynia Massacre (and killings in Eastern Galicia) the brutal genocide in which Ukrainian nationalists murdered between 60,000 and 100,000+ Polish civilians (including women and children). They killed them with axes, pitchforks, knives and saws simply because they were Polish Catholics.
Now Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has officially honored a Ukrainian military unit named after “Heroes of UPA”.
Leszek Miller, a former left-wing Prime Minister of Poland, strongly condemned it, saying it is “an open spit in the face of every Pole” whose families were slaughtered by the UPA.
