Ukrainian soldier and grandmaster Ihor Kovalenko won gold at the European Team Chess Championship, scoring the best result on his board — 6.5 out of 8 games.

He hadn’t played for three years because he was at the front. Then he returned to the board — and delivered. Kovalenko defeated the European champion from Serbia and drew with the favorite from England.
