Detectives in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County, have arrested an 18-year-old man suspected of murdering an 84-year-old woman in a brutal attack that left her fighting for her life.
The victim, Florence Khosa, 84, was admitted to Cheranganyi Nursing Home after sustaining serious injuries in the attack.
Despite the medical teamโs determined efforts to save her life, she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, detectives launched a manhunt for the suspect, identified as Ezekiel Nyongesa Barasa, who had gone into hiding.
The painstaking investigations and relentless police operations eventually paid off, with detectives trailing down and arresting the suspect.
He was subsequently subjected to an identification parade, where witnesses positively identified him.
But as detectives dug deeper, another lead surfaced, linking the suspect to another alleged killing involving an 86-year-old woman in Tongaren, Bungoma County.
Preliminary investigations have further established that the suspect may have sexually assaulted the 84-year-old victim before her death.
Detectives are now leaving no stone unturned as forensic examinations and other critical lines of investigation are being pursued to reconstruct the events and establish the full circumstances surrounding the offences.
The suspect remains in police custody as detectives piece together evidence ahead of his arraignment.

The Kenyan flag is set to fly high on two international shooting ranges this month, with four of the countryโs finest International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) athletes ready to lock horns with the worldโs best in the Philippines and Aruba.
Kenyaโs growing footprint in IPSC sport shooting is gaining momentum, with the countryโs shooters stepping onto the international stage at two major championships that promise to showcase the depth, skill, and competitive spirit of Kenyan talent.
Leading Kenyaโs charge in the Philippines is Charles Mugendi of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), who departed the country on August 12 to compete in the IPSC Level III Metroshoot Championship.
Mugendi is already in intensive preparations, training alongside some of the sportโs top international competitors, including Filipino shooter Bro Techson.
The high-level training is sharpening his competitive edge as he prepares to go head-to-head with some of the worldโs leading IPSC athletes.
For Mugendi, it is more than just another competition. It is an opportunity to put Kenyaโs name on the global shooting map and prove that Kenyan shooters can hold their own against the very best.
Across the waters in Aruba, Kenya Police Service shooters Peter Kivelete Muli and Aden Mohamed, alongside Jim Wood, will carry the Kenyan flag at the prestigious IPSC Pan American Championship Level IV.
All eyes will particularly be on Aden Mohamed, who will compete in the Optics Division, one of the relatively new divisions in IPSC competition.
His participation offers Kenya an important opportunity to establish an even stronger foothold in this emerging discipline and test its mettle against elite international competition.
The international assignments come at an important time for Kenyaโs sport-shooting programme, which continues to grow in strength and competitiveness.
The exposure gained from these championships will be invaluable as Kenya sharpens its preparations and reorganises its programme ahead of the Africa Sport Shooting Championship to be held in Zimbabwe in 2027.
The National Police Service (NPS) continues to nurture and support sporting talent among its officers, allowing them to excel both in service to the nation and on the international sporting stage.
The international exploits of Peter Kivelete Muli, Aden Mohamed and Charles Mugendi are a powerful demonstration of the calibre of talent within the Service, and a reminder that Kenyaโs uniformed officers are capable of competing and excelling far beyond the conventional boundaries of their duties.
Special appreciation goes to Mr. Frank Abundo, IPSC Regional Director Kenya, whose leadership and commitment have played an important role in advancing IPSC sport shooting in Kenya, and Team Manager Mr. Sanford Otundo, for his role in supporting the teamโs international engagements.
To Charles Mugendi, Peter Kivelete Muli, Aden Mohamed and Jim Wood, go forth, compete with distinction and make Kenya proud.

A crackdown on narcotics trafficking in Kitui and Homa Bay counties led to the recovery of consignments of cannabis sativa and the arrest of one suspect.
In Kitui, officers conducting a snap security check along the MachakosโKitui Highway at Mulutu intercepted a PSV matatu headed towards Kitui.
A search of passengers and their luggage turned up a consignment of cannabis sativa tucked away in a carrier bag. The passenger found in possession, Alius Musyoki Mwendwa, was arrested on the spot.
Meanwhile, in Homa Bay, officers raided a rental house at Litare Beach, Rusinga, where they recovered another consignment of suspected cannabis sativa hidden in nylon sacks.
The occupant, however, had vanished before officers arrived and is now a fugitive on the officersโ radar.
As the crackdown continues law enforcement officers remain hot on the heels of narcotics traffickers, determined to dismantle the supply chains and bring those fuelling the illicit trade to book.

INTERPOL POLICING CAPABILITIES FOUNDATION COURSE ROLLS OUT AT KIGANJO
More than 3,000 police recruits at the National Police College Main Campus, Kiganjo, have undergone a two-day sensitisation on INTERPOL policing capabilities, aimed at strengthening policing through international cooperation.
The training, facilitated by trainers from the National Police Leadership Academy (NPLA), National Criminal Investigations Academy (NCIA) and the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) Nairobi, introduced the recruits to key INTERPOL tools, including databases, Notices and Diffusions, and demonstrated how international cooperation can support investigations and combat transnational crime and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
With support from Project SoteriaโINTERPOL, Kenya is rolling out the INTERPOL Policing Capabilities Foundation Course, with certified Kenyan trainers leading the programme.
This approach ensures that knowledge and skills acquired are embedded within the national policing system and passed on to successive generations of officers.
As the recruits prepare for deployment across the country, the training will enable them to better leverage INTERPOL capabilities in support of investigations and strengthen international police cooperation from wherever they serve.
Elizabeth Wright, Senior Project Manager, Project SoteriaโINTERPOL, said, โBy putting this knowledge in the hands of Kenyan police trainers and introducing it early in officersโ careers, we are helping build an approach that can be sustained nationally and passed on to future generations.โ
The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance the preparedness and operational effectiveness of security officers in responding to evolving security threats facing the country.
The DCI reaffirms its commitment to strengthening national security through continuous capacity building, international and multi-agency collaboration, while advancing approaches in the prevention and investigation of transnational crimes.
NCIA CONCLUDES SPECIALISED COURSES FOR KRA OFFICERS
The National Criminal Investigations Academy (NCIA) has today concluded two specialised courses: Cybercrime, Digital Forensics, and Ethical Hacking; and Intelligence Analysis, Surveillance and Asset Tracing, for officers from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), aimed at strengthening their capacity to respond to emerging forms of cyber-enabled, financial and organised crime.
The courses equipped the officers with specialised skills in digital investigations, forensic examination, intelligence analysis, surveillance techniques and tracing illicit assets.
In remarks delivered on his behalf by the Director, Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, Mr. Dennis Okadapau, the Director DCI, Mr. Mohamed I. Amin, said the training had enhanced the officers' ability to identify digital evidence, analyse intelligence, trace criminal networks and follow financial trails linked to illicit activities. He emphasised that the evolving nature of crime requires investigators to continuously develop their technical capabilities and strengthen inter-agency cooperation.
"The knowledge acquired here must translate into stronger investigations, better intelligence and more effective disruption of criminal networks," he said.
Representing KRA, Mr. Erick Osenya appreciated NCIA for providing specialised training relevant to the Authority's enforcement mandate, noting that the skills acquired would enhance the officers' capacity to respond to emerging threats.
"This training has strengthened our capacity to investigate complex and technology-driven offences. We appreciate the partnership with NCIA and look forward to continued collaboration," said Mr. Osenya.
The Commandant NCIA, Mr. Ibrahim Jillo, underscored the importance of equipping investigators with modern capabilities to keep pace with evolving criminal methodologies, noting that the Academy remains focused on producing skilled, principled officers able to match the sophistication of contemporary crime.
The DCI Director of Training, Ms. Violet Makhanu, and the NCIA Deputy Commandant, Mr. Chacha, were also in attendance, alongside other senior officers.
The two courses reflect NCIA's continued drive to build specialised investigative expertise and deepen inter-agency partnerships in tackling complex and evolving crime.

Detectives from the Land Fraud Investigations Unit (LFIU) have apprehended a woman suspected of fraudulently acquiring a parcel of land associated with a deceased estate.
Agnes Wairimu Gachanja was arrested yesterday, August 19, 2026, in Ruiru, where she had attended a defence hearing for a separate land fraud case also under investigation by the LFIU.
The current case was brought forward by two complainants, who serve as administrators of their late father's estate following his passing in 2008.
The complainants discovered, during an official search at the Thika Land Registry as part of the succession process, that a parcel of land measuring approximately 0.0825 hectares in Juja Farm had been transferred to an unknown individual without their knowledge or consent.
A thorough investigation by the LFIU revealed that this parcel of land had subsequently been sold for Sh800,000.
Following the completion of the investigations, a duplicate police case file was submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
Upon review, the ODPP concurred with the investigating officerโs recommendation that the suspect be charged with three offences: conspiracy to defraud, uttering false documents, and intermeddling with the property of a deceased person.
Agnes Wairimu Gachanja has been processed and is scheduled to appear before the Ruiru Law Courts today, August 20, 2026, to face the charges.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) remains steadfast in its pursuit of individuals suspected of unlawfully seizing, transferring, or disposing of properties belonging to deceased estates, ensuring that those found guilty are brought to justice.
