🧵 President Trump’s attacks on the integrity of official statistics have continued. Last month, the US Census Bureau published an official brief that claims to have “readily determined with high confidence” that 24,000 non-US citizens illegally voted in the 2020 presidential election. The report flags: “Over 32 million voter records remain to be analyzed.”

The Census brief is of shockingly low quality across several dimensions. Like every professional economist, statistician, or demographer with whom I've spoken, I was astonished and deeply troubled to see analysis this shoddy be published by a gold-standard statistical agency.

The president himself posted about the report on social media, highlighting the 24,000 illegal vote figure and claiming that “The Census Bureau is going to analyze the next 32,000,000 Voters, and this number will explode. I WON THE ELECTION!”

Sadly, more shenanigans are coming. The Census brief described itself as “a beginning analysis,” and President Trump has already foreshadowed a follow-up report.

Before that happens, the authors of the first one should step out of the shadows and subject their analysis to interrogation by professional statisticians, economists, and demographers.

That sort of scrutiny is how US statistical agencies built the sterling reputations Mr. Trump is wantonly trashing — reputations that are a foundation of American prosperity.

My personal opinion is that Trump's lying about prices - that they're way down from when he took office, that almost everything is cheaper now, that they're falling rapidly right now - is his single most politically damaging category of lie.

Update: The White House updated the “accomplishments” app page this morning or last night. It now features a series of recent economic numbers (household income, jobs added in August, etc.), but no longer mentions gas prices, inflation or GDP growth.

Just checked out this White House app. Under “accomplishments,” it lists…

1) Gas prices from seven months ago, before the Iran war (they’re now more than $1.50 per gallon higher — $4.48, per AAA)
2) The inflation rate from seven months ago, before the Iran war (the most recent rate, for August, was a full percentage point higher, 3.4%)
3) GDP growth from three quarters ago (the most recent available quarter, Q2 2026, was nearly three points lower, 1.5%)

In summary, it may possibly be helpful to consume news from news outlets.

President Trump has been casually asserting, including this morning at the UN, that people realized they couldn't use the phrase "global warming" anymore because they realized the planet was actually "cooling, not warming." He makes no acknowledgment of the ongoing global warming that people very much still discuss even while also referring more broadly to "climate change."
