Over the past five years, the USA has been granted endless opportunities to alter its extradition request for Julian Assange: Three rounds of indictments and two rounds of assurances. Where the grounds for the US request are barred by the Extradition Act, the court has invited the US executive to provide a political fix through unenforceable ‘diplomatic assurances’. Where the request for Julian is explicitly barred by the US-UK Treaty (Article 4-political offences), the court has ruled the exclusion clause is non-enforceable.
