Overall grade is calculated from the average of the three Part 2 components.

Part 3 – 10 km loaded march (14 kg) is a separate test and must be completed within 8 weeks. Part 3 booked for Wed 2nd Sept.

Students from across the three formations recently completed Exercise BREAK IN, a 108 hour Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) exercise conducted during the Young Officers (YOs) Course. Included is also footage from the All Arms Standard NCO Course, completing their own MOUT exercise. Students were assessed in urban operations, close target reconnaissance and platoon command before assaulting, securing and defending a built up area (BUA) against a simulated enemy counter attack.

Following MOUT, the Infantry YOs deployed on Exercise HARD STOP, a 96 hour defensive exercise where students were assessed in conventional defensive tactics, techniques and procedures before moving onto the final portion of the exercise phase, a 96 hour offensive exercise.

Recently at Defence Forces Headquarters in McKee Barracks, Dublin, the Office of Reserve Affairs hosted “Beyond the workplace: Reserve Defence Forces employer engagement”.

The event brought together employers, employer organisations and Defence Forces personnel to highlight the value that reservists and reserve service bring to the civilian workplace. The programme opened with an address from the Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy, followed by a security and defence perspective from analyst Declan Power. Lieutenant Laura Curran provided an overview of service in the Reserve Defence Forces, and Ciaran Foley, CEO of Rexel UK and Ireland, shared an employer perspective on the benefits of supporting employees who serve as reservists.

The discussion focused on how reserve service develops leadership, resilience, teamwork and decision making skills that directly benefit employers, while also strengthening national defence capability. Events such as this play an important role in building awareness of the Reserve Defence Forces and strengthening partnerships with employers across Ireland.

On Thursday, 15 MAY 26, the first chalk of the 127th Infantry Battalion arrived home following a challenging and demanding deployment with UNIFIL in South Lebanon.

Throughout their deployment, personnel of the 127th Infantry Battalion operated in a complex and volatile environment, displaying professionalism, resilience and courage while representing Ireland and Óglaigh na hÉireann with distinction.

Today, the Defence Forces Cavalry Corps Team (Callsign Shamrock 1) took home first place in the Bradley category in the 2026 Sullivan Cup. The Defence Forces Cavalry Corps team competed in the 2026 Sullivan Cup, hosted in Fort Benning, GA, USA. The purpose of the Sullivan Cup is to identify and recognise the most skilled armoured vehicle crews internationally. The competition consisted of gunnery live fire lanes by day and night, vehicle maintenance, crew knowledge, call for fire, AFV recognition, medical lanes and physical fitness challenges.
Our team had a two week window to train up in theatre on the Bradley Fighting Vehicle having never used the platform before. After completing two weeks of training successfully, the competition started on 30 APR 26 and the Cavalry Corps emerged as the winners.

Congratulations to the 28 Inf Bn team who participated in the Massachusetts Best Warrior Competition and to Cpl Dylan Quigg who was outright winner and highest place NCO in the competition.

Brigadier General Mark Brownen has been appointed as General Officer Commanding the Defence Forces Training Centre by the Minister of Defence and Government. A native of County Cork, Brigadier General Brownen is a professional Infantry officer with over 40 years’ experience in a variety of roles across the Defence Forces as well as deployments with the United Nations, NATO and EU.

Brigadier General Brownen has served in a wide variety of appointments throughout his career in both operations and command. He has served as the Director of Infantry of the Defence Forces and as Staff Officer and Instructor in a variety of Defence Forces Headquarters and Military College appointments. He has had several command appointments including the 3rd Infantry Battalion, 1 Mechanised Infantry Battalion and as Officer Commanding the 57 Infantry Group UNDOF, in Syria. His overseas experience includes multiple deployments to Lebanon, Chad, Afghanistan, Cote de Ivoire, Mali, Syria, and Kosovo. Brigadier General Brownen has been an active participant and leader of the Defence Forces Diving Group and Defence Forces Adventure Group throughout his career and is currently the President of both groups.

Brigadier General Brownens’ educational qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts from NUIG, an MA in Leadership, Management & Defence Studies from MU and a Diploma in French from the University of Westminster. He is a graduate of the Defence Forces’ Command & Staff Course.

Today, the Minister for Defence, Helen McEntee TD, presented Distinguished Service Medals (DSMs) to members of Óglaigh na hÉireann at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa Barracks (Mellows Barracks), Co. Galway.

The medals were awarded to Private Dylan Geraghty (with Honours), Corporal Daniel Padden (with Distinction), Private Ciara Shanahan (with Merit) and Father Paul Murphy (with Merit), in recognition of their courageous actions during and after the incident at Renmore Barracks on 15 August 2024.

Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy said:

“The awarding of Distinguished Service Medals to these four members of Óglaigh na hÉireann is a fitting and well deserved recognition of their courage, professionalism and moral resolve in the face of a violent attack on Father Paul Murphy.

Their actions exemplify the very highest standards of Óglaigh na hÉireann. In a moment of extreme danger, they acted decisively, selflessly and with complete regard for the protection of life. This outcome is a direct reflection of the rigorous training, discipline and values instilled in our personnel throughout their careers.

I am immensely proud of these soldiers. Their conduct brings great pride to their unit, An Chéad Chathlán Coisithe (The 1st Infantry Battalion), and to the Defence Forces as a whole, and it reinforces the trust placed in us by the people we serve”.

1/ RDFRA has recently received some difficult news about our member and comrade Mariusz Oplawski of the Naval Service Reserve. Mariusz was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in December of last year, and is currently undergoing specialist treatment in Poland.
