A workshop was organised by DG Shipping and General Insurance Council, today in Mumbai on the recently launched Bharat Maritime Insurance (BMI) Pool, to educate shipowners, cargo owners, and shipping lines, and to chart the roadmap for domestic P&I cover.
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Debashish Prusty, Additional Secretary, DFS, with participation from senior leaders of DG Shipping, Shipping Corporation of India, GI Council, GIC Re, NIACL & others.
*Key highlight* : 27–48% reduction in premiums for Hull War & Cargo War risk covers under BMI Pool.
Future roadmap suggested:
• Develop domestic P&I product domestically
• Scale BMI Pool covers to selective ocean-going vessels with MoPSW
• Explore integration with International Group P&I Clubs via mutual club formation, aligned with global standards.
The Pool manager GIC Re addressed shipowners’ queries on coverage. Discussions also focused on devising a dedicated P&I insurance product to meet India’s immediate needs.
In today’s volatile global environment, Indian vessels rely heavily on IG P&I Clubs for liability cover. BMI Pool offers sovereign guarantee + lower premiums → making maritime insurance more affordable & strengthening India’s maritime sovereignty.
