They were the sons of Ulster.
So loved and cherished. Fathers, husbands, sons and brothers.
The men who volunteered.
They marched into that horrendous battle with such bravery, and so many never left.
Their blood forever lies in the fields of France.
So many young boys, a generation lost to Ulster but always remembered so proudly for their extraordinary act of service, of duty and of love.
They stepped forward for all of us in the defence of freedom and against tyranny.
What a debt we owe them.
We must never forget the sacrifice of the Somme.
Men from right across these islands fought side by side, died side by side. In this and so many other battles too.
It is an honour to be here in France in this morning of the 1st July to remember them all.
Somme 110
Lest we forget
