Preferring "clean air" sounds good, but ignores the full picture. Modern DPF/DEF systems force frequent active regenerations that burn extra diesel, raising total fuel consumption, CO2, particulates, and upstream pollution from refining more fuel.

This is not negligible. We are talking about a 10-20% improvement in diesel mpg when these systems are removed.

They also add complexity that slashes reliability and engine longevity, driving more frequent truck replacements and the massive manufacturing emissions that come with them. A deleted, properly tuned diesel often runs more efficiently per mile with fewer forced inefficiencies—net lower lifecycle pollution despite higher tailpipe NOx in isolation.
Tailpipe theater isn't cleaner air if it wastes more fuel and builds more trucks. Real environmental wins come from durability and efficiency, not over-engineered systems that punish operators.
