This could be an unpopular take, but I can’t believe boys are giving up on football.
Want to run cross country or play tennis, I get it.
But, being involved in football changed my life. Teamwork. Bus rides. Locker rooms. Do something. Don’t stay home on Friday nights.
Every missed box-out is a potential game-changing mistake.
Every lazy pass is a turnover waiting to happen.
Every half-speed sprint on defense gives the other team hope.
Coached a lot of youth girls hoops this month. Really watching the concerning trends of participation in our state.
Have a lot of thoughts on “the model” and why girls are quitting.
- No need for second or third grade basketball GAMES. Skill development? Yes. 3-on-3 leagues? Awesome.
- In youth volleyball, guess who refs the games? The other players and coaches. Police themselves. In basketball, girls get knocked over for 5-6 years and decide it’s not worth it in high school. I get it.
- More players would play if we played FEWER GAMES that were better officiated. Just a hunch. “Hey mom, that was fun, I didn’t spend the whole game on the ground.”
- I KNOW we have an officials shortage. But we have to SHUT UP at games at the JV and high school varsity level. Only makes it worse. On the other side….
- JV officials if you are getting paid, call the first HAND CHECK. Just don’t allow it. Then girls won’t get knocked over for 32 minutes and you’ll get a breather while they shoot free throws. I have seen way too many gruesome injures at the JV level the last few years.
- Coaches!! I get the game has turned physical because of the whistle. But we can teach our kids to play without fouling!! I watched Bennington and Norris (on my TV, sadly) on Friday. Same for Elkhorn Valley and Central City. You can play GREAT defense without fouling. Promise.
Ok. That’s enough. If you are playing in a conference tournament this week go have fun. Cut a dang net down. I hope I can watch your team soon.

This offseason, we’re focused on becoming better athletes, knowing it will transfer over to the court. We’re training explosiveness, acceleration, force absorption, and correct movement mechanics to help us be quicker, more powerful, and reduce the risk of injury.

After a great conversation with @coach_rstanley I’m blessed to announce that I have received an offer to play basketball at Union Commonwealth University! Go Bulldogs!

2026 Summer camp is completed. We loved being able to work with the future of our program. Proud of our girls. They are great role models for these young ones to look up to. It’s a great day to be a Lady Cat!
It was great talking with Stephen again and Vic. Always love the opportunity to promote Edmonson County Athletics. Our kids deserve it. @1027TheGame does a great job covering the 3rd region.
Things you notice after 1000 games:
Crazy how people complain that coaches have favorites…
I had favorites when I coached…
• On time • Consistent • Coachable • Prepared • Positive under pressure • Reliable • Accountable • Bring energy, not excuses • Make others better •
Funny, most bosses would appreciate the chance to hire people that knew how to: • Be On time • Be Consistent • Be Coachable • Be Prepared • Be Positive under pressure • Be Reliable • Be Accountable • Bring energy, not excuses • Make others better •

Loved getting in the schools this week at South and Kyrock to talk about our Future Lady Cat basketball camp.
Proud of our seniors Shelby and Addison, who did an outstanding job communicating and representing our program as great role models in front of our elementary kids.
