Fighting Metabolic Diseases Through Immune Modulation

How does the immune system influence metabolism?
💡 A new study from #HelmholtzMunich and #DZD uncovers a key link between the immune system and metabolism in the brain’s hypothalamic region. The researchers found that regulatory T cells (Tregs) not only regulate immunity but also support metabolic balance.
The results open new perspectives on immune-based therapies as a promising approach for treating metabolic diseases, including #obesity and #Type2diabetes.

Out today in @ScienceMagazine! We show that rising self-antigen levels during infection give self-reactive T cells an opportunity for enhanced TCR signalling. Regulatory T cells of matched specificity counteract this, thereby preventing autoimmunity. https://t.co/qtPMsBG4A1
Excited about setting up a pipeline with machine learning for fiber typing and morphometric analyses of skeletal muscle. I'm impressed by how beautiful Immunofluorescence is - there's just something timeless about it! 🔬
Thanks, @DyarKen and #Taoyue for this great opportunity!

🎙️ What advice would you give your younger self?
🗨️ “Surround yourself with inspiring people, delegate efficiently and learn how to say no.”
- Prof. Eleftheria Zeggini, Director of the Institute of Translational Genomics
🎙️What would you change for future generations?
🗨️"I would create a future where origin, race, and background are not even thought of in the workplace. Instead, everyone would be valued and united in the scientific endeavor based solely on their commitment, passion, work quality, and ethics."
- Prof. Maria-Elena Torres-Padilla, Director of the Institute for Epigenetics and Stem Cells
🎙️What advice would you give your younger self?
🗨️“Be yourself, follow your passion, be curious and ask bold questions. Trust the journey, foster team growth and diverse perspectives. Science is a marathon, not a sprint - enjoy growing along the way.”
- Prof. Carolin Daniel, Head of the Research Unit “Type 1 Diabetes Immunology”
🎙️What was your career booster?
🗨️“Not doing it alone - a supportive network of colleagues, mentors, friends, and family, as well as taking turns not only in private, but also professionally and collaboratively. While there has certainly been an element of chance, seeking and then also daring to seize opportunities has been invaluable.”
- Prof. Julia Schnabel, Director of the Institute of Machine Learning in Biomedical Imaging
