1⃣ Yorgen Fenech
- arrested 20/11/2019
- consulted his principal lawyer for around 20 hours
- gave an official statement to the police accompanied by a lawyer
- told police he gave Melvin Theuma the go-ahead to execute the plan to assassinate Daphne: “lil Melvin ghidtlu OK”.
After celebrating Mass at St John’s Co-Cathedral yesterday for Malta’s Independence Day, I visited Michael Vella, father of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, murdered in 2017. I was moved by the dignity of a father still grieving for his daughter and hoping to see full justice.
🚩Without accountability, trust in the rule of law erodes. We stand in solidarity with Daphne’s family, who have been tirelessly fighting for justice & all other journalists facing retaliation for their work.

In Budapest at UNCOVERED 2026, we gathered in solidarity following the 2 September acquittal of Yorgen Fenech in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. A huge setback for justice. We add our voice to the campaign to keep the fight for accountability alive. #JusticeForDaphne
3⃣ Yorgen Fenech was charged with complicity in Daphne’s assassination and with criminal association.
His police statement was played in court during his jury trial for Daphne's assassination.
Despite Fenech admission in his police statement, the jury failed to convict him.

Yorgen Fenech was acquitted of killing a journalist, his next move was to instruct his lawyers to threaten newsrooms. Mapping Media Freedom flagged the warning as a threat to press freedom.

Members of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s family, at a @PACE_LegalHR hearing this morning in Paris, have denounced the failure to convict anyone for ordering her murder.
More on the hearing, feeding into a coming report by PACE's Baroness Shami Chakrabarti:

PROTEST: "It is a collective demand for truth, reform and accountability, one that cannot be silenced by a verdict that caused widespread shock and anger."

@OSCE_RFoM Thank you for your support. Fenech's acquittal of charges for Daphne's murder, despite his admission in court and to the police, is a blow. The prosecutor is filing an appeal. This will not be the end of our fight for justice.
3⃣ Yorgen Fenech's trial can deliver accountability for Daphne's murder. Lasting justice means no journalist should ever face the same risks again. Malta must ensure the first killing of a journalist is the last. #DaphneCaruanaGalizia#EndImpunity
1⃣ Yorgen Fenech's ongoing trial is showing how corrupt influence enabled Daphne's assassination. Yet, 5 years after the public inquiry exposed the link between corruption & Daphne's murder, #Malta hasn't delivered the reforms journalists need.

2⃣ In 2021, the public inquiry into Daphne's assassination concluded the Maltese State must bear responsibility for her death. Most of its recommendations have not been implemented. #DaphneCaruanaGalizia
