Really happy that a moth made it to the cover of @Nature! Thanks to my co-author Gunnar Brehm for this great photo 📸

🦋 New paper out!
Dry moth specimens retain only 30-40% of their original body mass. We derived correction factors to estimate fresh weight from museum collections.

🦋 What if we could automatically extract traits from thousands of Lepidoptera specimens?
We present LEPY, a Python pipeline for automated extraction of morphological and colour traits from Lepidoptera images!

We applied LEPY to moth datasets (Sphingidae & Saturniidae) along an elevational gradient in the Peruvian Andes.
The results show taxon-specific changes in morphology and colour traits with elevation.

I will give a talk at 54th GfÖ Annual Meeting on 32-04 - LEPY: A Python Pipeline for Automated Trait Analysis of Lepidoptera Images Tested Along an Elevational Gradient. Hoping for a great turnout! - via #Whova event app
Quiero compartir con ustedes esta guía en inglés de los esfíngidos de Bogotá que hice en colaboración con el Colegio Campestre.
La guía es gratuita en digital, y tenemos unas pocas copias físicas a 50 mil.

🧵 1/ New study on squamate color evolution hits the press: we show that brightness variation in lizards & snakes is strongly linked to habitat openness 🌞 https://t.co/Jxd46s0rkb
Second PhD paper published!
Curious about mammal diversity patterns and their drivers along a tropical elevation gradient? 🐆🌳

The Budke Lab @UTK_EEB is recruiting #PhD students to start fall 2025. Applications due Dec 1. Check out our lab website to see if your research interests are a good fit https://t.co/0WKkz4r2GY & then reach out via email. Please RT & thanks! #gradschool#phdjourney
On Jan. 1, I start as a Professor and Curator at the American Museum of Natural History. I am recruiting PhD students and Postdoctoral scholars. Happy to discuss GRFP and PRFB applications. Reach out if you are interested in sensory ecology questions!
If you’re a prospective graduate student or postdoc from the US interested in working in my lab on butterfly+moth evolution, genetics, behavior, conservation, please contact me! We can help you write a strong NSF GRFP or PRFB proposal to get you funded! Both are due this fall.
