Storm Floris causes landslide on historic island
A 'significant' landslip has taken place at St Kilda caused by heavy rainfall from Storm Floris.
The world heritage site consists of an archipelago 65km (35 nautical miles) west-northwest of North Uist, the most remote islands of the Outer Hebrides. The archipelago is cared for by the National Trust for Scotland and is the UK’s only dual UNESCO world heritage site designated for both its cultural and environmental significance.
Tonnes of mud and stone were swept down the hillside damaging some of the unique cleits* and demolishing drystone dyke enclosures at the bottom of the slope.
A *cleit is a stone storage hut or bothy, uniquely found on the isles and stacks of St Kilda; whilst many are still to be found, they are slowly falling into disrepair. There are known to be 1,260 cleitean on Hirta and a further 170 on the other St Kilda-group islands.
St Kilda is inhabited by the world’s largest gannet colony, and a few occasional researchers.
In the UK, it's #NationalBloodWeek by @givebloodnhs. The NHS is currently short of 200,000 donors.
I've been a platelet donor for a while - I donate about every 4 weeks. It's painless and incredibly worthwhile.
If you can, please volunteer to donate.

I have posted my provisional analysis of fatal landslides in 2024 on my blog. In total, 708 fatal landslides (excluding those triggered by an earthquake), cost 4,492 lives. This is far higher than in any previous year for which I have data.

A better image (a row last summer and row this morning) showing the extent of the rock that came away.
... And I guarantee we will still see people sat on the beach underneath them, or dangling their legs over the edges, come summer ☀️
First of three long festive away days today, at Portsmouth, a city in which I worked for 5 years. A fine real ale start to the day at The Brewers Tap. #pusb
