@purves_grundy@TheFootballFeed It was, but they still won the tournament. So were the best team in Europe at that time, the standard in 96 was pretty low compared to, say, 2000.
It’s always overlooked the prem was shite compared to other leagues then, so the England team - how good was it really?
@purves_grundy@TheFootballFeed Team definitely improved as the tournament went on and I’ll never know how we didn’t beat Germany in that semi. His selections were right as well compared to bizarre ones we’ve seen since.
Genuinely look back at 96 and think we were unlucky, unlike others where we were shit
@ALANMYERSMEDIA The issue is not the player (clearly nowhere near up to it) or his attitude.
It’s the club hierarchy who have awarded him a 3 year deal. Shows you everything you need to know.
And of course he’s going to take it, who wouldn’t in his position?
@NicholasTyrone 2006 - was still injured
2008 - didn’t qualify
2010 - coming back from an injury, not fit
2012 - missed first 2 games suspended, played 2 games
2014 - he didn’t perform, but fuck me. What a shambles that Hodgson team was
2016 - finished as a player
Explains a lot…
@StanCollymore I’d disagree to an extent - it’s their level of player has dropped massively.
Im 41, I remember Romario, Ronaldo, Dinho, Rivaldo, even Denilson internationally. Last 1 they really had was Neymar.
Now their strikers are like English strikers - just big and strong, little flair
@EvertonNewsFeed Once we got going that 1st season, it was the only time I genuinely fancied us going in to every game. We looked incredible.
His stubbornness with Tom Howard and his tactics in the 3rd season spelt the end, when I still think he could have easily sorted both out
@fletcher082 Most Liverpool fans I know support England in tournaments like I do.
Difference is I’m / they’re not that arsed if they lose, it’s tiers down from supporting Everton for me.
But I hope they win, more for the spectacle of the WC etc which is the biggest tournament on Earth
@JezClein He’s doing this with a hologram of a left back behind him (so no overlapping, hence he’s always doubled up on) and half the season he had Barry to try and find with balls, who is as useless as our leftback
@sid_lambert He was a player Dacourt - was gutted when he left Everton.
Classic Everton really, signed him and Materazzi in the same window, we just about stay up (mostly due to Campbell and his goals) and them 2 fuck off and win god knows what elsewhere 😂
