Think about what it means to order the killing of your own soldiers in order to prevent them from becoming part of a prisoner exchange.

It means that Israeli officials consider it a higher priority to keep detaining Palestinian men, women, and children without charge than to release some in exchange for those soldiers.

That logic is so obviously inhumane that Israel officially ended the Hannibal Directive policy on paper, yet obviously kept it in practice, because we now have many different reports of it being implemented on October 7. And we also know that the bombing campaign was organized through 2023 and 2024 in a way that many Israeli officials understood to be highly likely to kill captives Israelis in Gaza, as +972 has exposed.

In the first hours of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, while conversing with Israel's Police Chief Kobi Shabtai, another senior officer calls to implement the Hannibal Directive, and destroy Gaza along with the Israeli captives. Minister Itamar Ben Gvir later arrives and orders to stop filming the meeting.

The red flowers represent the 1,507 people killed during two periods officially described as ceasefires:
• Ceasefire 2024: 397 killed 
• Ceasefire 2026: 1,110 killed

At first glance, 0.9 people killed per day during the first ceasefire may not sound like much. But over the course of that ceasefire, 397 people were killed.

The second ceasefire was far deadlier. In just 52 days, 1,110 people were killed.

Neither period looked much like what most people think of when they hear the word "ceasefire." People were still being killed and the violence never actually stopped. Infact the violence is still ongoing today.
