I have a big new research paper on an epistemic problem we don’t discuss enough in astrobiology. Currently in review but I couldn’t wait to share so here is the video... https://t.co/tmmbtzS5fq
@TheoBasileus Nihilism argues that life is meaningless, but that’s far from what I am suggesting. I’m suggesting that our influence and control of the Universe may be bounded, and that quite possibly the greatest impact we can have is on the conscious experience of our fellow beings.
The Universe is a terrifyingly stark & cold place. As far as we can see, fast travel is prohibited, there’s no-one else out there & death is an inevitable end. Even legacy is one day forgotten. It’s as if the cosmos is telling us that what really matters is right here, right now.
@WizZifnab It is kind of hilarious that someone can post a message on X advocating for kindness to one another and there’s a ton of bros triggered by such a notion.
@peterrhague I never advocated for disregarding the future though. The problem I see in your logic is that you are implicitly assuming that my explicit call for kindness in the present is somehow incompatible with kindness in the future. Those are not mutually exclusive, that's a false choice
