So many of Batman's enemies in TAS ended not by getting clobbered or foiled but by succumbing to their own obsessions and feelings.
This show was made for a young audience, but it trusted that audience to be able to comprehend and understand complicated emotions.
I advised the mother of one of our students to do this. She said he was in a "very dark and scary place". Now, he's a thriving art entrepreneur. She just told me that he secretly sold a bunch of his art, saved up $, and treated her to a NYC visit and Broadway show. He's only 12!
If your child is bright, alert, energetic and so forth, and you gradually see the light leaving their eyes, they are starting fewer projects, they are less excited about school, they do not do all the cool things, when they start to be, I don't know, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, pull them out.
Pull them out of traditional schooling and into homeschooling, or join a virtual K-12 school like ours, but don't let the light in their eyes fade.
The happiest teens I know are apprenticing or working, discovering purpose through meaningful action. Yet 66 percent of teenagers from our K-12 system report feeling disengaged in high school. We have replaced real-world preparation with artificial environments that breed dysfunction.
Why do we accept this?
I think kids used to be the best entertainment around. They are joyful, playful, ask incredible questions... but then we got radio, tv, movies, smart phones and there was a constant stream of entertainment at our fingertips. People were no longer were amused by kids.
Kids are stupid and that's why they win. They don't know love hurts so they love everything. I learned love destroys so I love nothing. Kids waste their hearts on people who don’t deserve it. I save mine for no one. They're fools. I'm smart. They're happy. I'm empty. Kids cry when something hurts them. Right away. Loud. I swallow pain until it poisons me from inside. Call it maturity. Kids want things and ask for them. Shameless. I want things and hate myself for wanting. They forgive because they forget. I remember everything and forgive nothing. Kids see magic in dirt. I see dirt in magic. They're dumb enough to believe the world is good. I'm smart enough to know it's not. But their dumbness gets them everything. My smartness gets me nothing. The kingdom belongs to who never learned to doubt. I learned too much
Many homeschoolers start out trying to “cover” school curriculum until they realize it is mostly wasted time. Some structured approach to math is useful, but if a child is reading, building things, and having constructive conversations with their parents about the world, that is likely more valuable than much of school content.
In school, teachers used to look at my obsessions and call them “distractions.” I wasn’t the only one. It’s a shame that so many schools pull kids away from their innate curiosities. Some guardrails are good, but we have way too many. Makes kids hate learning.
At a @Harvard conference on the Growth of Emerging School Models. This time last year, I think this room was less than half full. Today, not only is it packed but there are people watching in an overflow room!
Anyone doubting the trend does so at their own peril.
8) Take them to galleries, museums, and events.
Show them that creativity is celebrated and appreciated.
Exposing them to new forms of art, styles and techniques will broaden their creative horizons.
7) Allow for autonomy.
The more freedom a child has, the more they will develop their unique way of thinking.
Let them choose their learning path, and allow them to make mistakes.
This autonomy breeds creativity, innovation, and resourcefulness.
