In Manchester Central Library the other day I came across an old book recounting the sinking of a sailing barge called The Emma on the River Irwell in 1828 with up to 300 passengers on board. @MancLibraries

It's a tragedy that's little known in Manchester and I'd never heard of it before. I've brought the story back to life here including some of the strange methods they used to resuscitate the victims and what happened to one of the rescuers after someone stole his clothes.
