When a journalist who has covered American politics for more than 40 years says he has never seen anything like JD Vance, that’s a statement worth noticing.

Veteran journalist John Harwood wrote:

“In more than 40 years of covering politics I have never seen a more shameless liar than J.D. Vance. He’s utterly amoral.”

Harwood has watched presidents, congressional leaders, scandals, campaigns and political transformations across multiple generations. He covered Washington for The Wall Street Journal, CNBC, The New York Times and CNN.

So this isn’t commentary coming from someone who discovered politics yesterday.

Of course, describing Vance as “amoral” or the most “shameless liar” Harwood has encountered is ultimately an opinion. People can judge Vance’s record and rhetoric for themselves.

But what makes the statement remarkable is the comparison.

After decades covering some of the most controversial politicians in modern American history, Harwood is saying Vance stands out even among them.

That is one hell of an assessment of the Vice President of the United States.
