After 9/11, the U.S. called. Denmark answered. Thousands of Danish troops served in Helmand—on the front line. We lost more soldiers per capita than even the United States. That was solidarity. We stood with America then—and we still do.
I witnessed our brave men & women during my 1,5 years in Afghanistan.
Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of participating in the Gubernatorial Inauguration of the Governor, @MikieSherrill in New Jersey, @NJGov.
Denmark and NJ have a longstanding partnership, and we look forward to the continued dialogue between our two regions.
This morning, we found flowers & handwritten note outside Embassy that read: “Americans love Denmark.”
We’ve received hundreds of emails, cards & calls underscoring friendship that binds our nations. We're not able to respond to every message but we take note of every single one
The last few days have highlighted shared objectives & clear differences between the Kingdom of Denmark & the U.S.
The position of 🇩🇰 & 🇬🇱 remains clear:
👉 Through the Kingdom of Denmark, 🇬🇱 is a member of @NATO & covered by Article 5. A stronger NATO role in the Arctic remains a priority.
👉 Under the 1951 Defence Agreement, the U.S. can request an increased military presence in 🇬🇱. Any such request would be examined constructively and expeditiously.
👉 The Kingdom of Denmark is open to expanding 🇺🇸 collaboration on Arctic security and has already significantly increased its own contributions, committing $13.7bn to new defense and Arctic security capabilities.
👉 🇩🇰🇬🇱 & 🇺🇸 agree on the objective: strengthening long-term security in the Arctic.
👉 Greenland is not for sale. The future of 🇬🇱 should only be determined by the people of Greenland.
A high-level working group will meet in the coming weeks to address 🇺🇸 security concerns while respecting the Kingdom of Denmark’s clear red lines.
Great to see the support of 40 Members of Congress & friends last night w. 🇩🇰 FM @larsloekke & 🇬🇱 FM Vivian Motzfeldt at the residence discussing 🇩🇰🇬🇱-🇺🇸 relations & Arctic security priorities.

His Royal Highness Brigadier General Prince Joachim & @GreenlandRepDC welcomes 🇬🇱 Minister for Foreign Affairs & Research Vivian Motzfeldt to Washington DC. 🇬🇱 & 🇩🇰 cooperate w. mutual respect, respect for democracy & international law – together we stand strong.
“Greenland does not want to be owned by, governed by or part of the United States. We choose the Greenland we know today – as part of the Kingdom of Denmark,” said FM Motzfeldt.
Yes, history does matter:
The Kingdom of Denmark has always stood shoulder-to-shoulder w. 🇺🇸. After 9/11, 🇩🇰 answered the US' call. We lost more soldiers in Afghanistan per capita than any other @NATO ally.
Facts matter too:
➡️🇬🇱 has been a part of the Kingdom of Denmark for centuries. That has repeatedly been recognized by 🇺🇸administrations, in the @UN, and internationally.
➡️Only the people of 🇬🇱 should decide their future. A vast majority of Greenlanders voted yes to its self-governing status inside the Kingdom. This week, all five parties in the Parliament of 🇬🇱 repeated they don't want to become 🇺🇸
➡️For 80 years, 🇩🇰🇬🇱 & 🇺🇸 have had a successful security partnership in the Arctic. Let’s continue to address security challenges in the Arctic as partners & allies.
Yes, history does matter:
Greenland belongs to its people. It is up for Greenland and Denmark, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Greenland and Denmark. The Governments of Greenland and Denmark is very clear on this.
