There are many trade-offs to their adoption.

But they have already indicated that they follow rules better, and treat people outside the car with a higher priority than average human driving.

Automated cars can be as respectful or as bad towards other modes as we choose and/or regulate. And THEY COMPLY with regs, unlike all ppl.

And the current crop, Waymo for example, has proven to defer right-of-way to pedestrians & cyclists FAR MORE than human drivers do.
