It does make sense. Use nonlinear and/or discontinuous metrics and you get sharp discontinuous results. Use linear metrics and get continuous results.

I get the sense he doesn't contact her and she can't contact him and has no way to know if he's alive or dead. That's 100% loss.

@MadScientistFF 1990 I was 13 & wired my own phone off the outside box outside my window. Had a cassette deck/radio player, but didn't have a CD player til '94. Had to "borrow" my sisters. Didn't have a TV in my room until college.
