Milkweed plants act as essential host plants for Monarch butterfly caterpillars and their flowers support a wide variety of pollinators. Their seeds are dispersed by the wind using long, silky hairs, which allow them to spread easily across the prairie.

Swainson's Hawks are the most common hawk in Lethbridge. In the fall, look for flocks swirling in the skies or resting on fence posts gearing up to undertake an incredible 9,500km migration to over-wintering grounds in South America.

Hawk moth caterpillars are commonly called hornworms because of the distinctive horn-like tail on their rear ends. They are voracious eaters and can grow as large as a person’s finger! Late summer, they bury into the ground or leaf litter and spin a cocoon to overwinter in.
