On 9/11 America was attacked.

At West Point, we knew immediately that everything had changed.

We were cadets preparing to become Army officers. But after watching the towers fall and the Pentagon burn, the mission suddenly became very real.

We knew we were going to war.

We had raised our right hands.
We had sworn an oath.
And now our country was calling.

My generation of West Pointers graduated and went directly into a nation at war.

We became aviators, armor officers, and combat leaders. We deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Some of my classmates never came home.

Others came home forever changed.

My path took me to the Middle East and ultimately into the cockpit of an Apache helicopter, flying combat missions over the skies of Baghdad.

Before every mission, I knew the risks.
But I also knew why we were there.
Because America had been attacked.

Because innocent Americans had been murdered.

And because when evil comes for this country, there must always be Americans willing to stand up and fight back.

Twenty-five years later, I still think about that generation of young Americans who watched September 11th unfold and made a decision:

SEND ME.

We answered the call.
We carried the flag into battle.
And we proved once again that America is worth fighting for. 🇺🇸
